About this listen

How far will some go to safeguard a secret? In the latest novel in Dianne Freeman's witty and delightful historical mystery series, the adventurous Countess Harleigh finds out....

On August 12th each year, members of the upper class retire to their country estates for grouse-shooting season. Frances Wynn, the widowed Countess of Harleigh, however, is expecting to spend a quiet few months in London.

Instead, she's immersed in a shocking mystery when a friend, Mary Archer, is found murdered. Her cousin Charles is in the spotlight for the murder, along with dozens of others.

It seems Mary had countless notes hidden in her home, detailing private indiscretions of society's elite. Frances can hardly believe that Mary was a blackmailer, yet why else would she horde such juicy tidbits?

Aided by her gallant friend George Hazelton, Frances begins assisting the police. Even more worrying is that the number of victims is increasing too....

Brilliant book. Great story and very well narrated.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters were likeable and the storyline was brilliant with both mystery and touches of humour. A great book for a bedtime read.

Always a delightful listen

The characters are great and as the books progress their development is brilliant. The stories are plausible and well delivered. Will be very sorry to finish this series.

Perfect match of narrator to story

Karen Cass is my new favourite narrator. She brings everyone to life. When you have listened to a few books, you know that bad narrator can ruin a brilliant book but a good one can elevate it, which is the case here
I really like the fact that the author has brought the same characters back and that it’s set shortly after the first one so you can continue the journey with the characters. I’m going straight into the next book

The lovely characters and the brilliant narrator

The reader is simply the best I’ve ever heard. No silly affected habits, excellent accents, she characterises different voices of the same gender so that you always know who’s talking which is so clever.

The stories are complex enough to keep you wondering, and the people are different enough to be realistic. The main character is sardonic as well as genuinely nice, which is refreshing compared with the usual one-dimensional personalities and motivations in the genre.

... he raised a brow

Poorly written, filled with cliches, and over and over and over again someone 'raises a brow'. I wish I had started counting these brow raises from the beginning: there must be hundreds of them. Perhaps a new listener might take up the challenge?
People's brows do, however, also dip downwards, draw together, fall, wrinkle and so on with almost equal regularity, so it maybe that I am being unfair?
