About this listen
How often do we ask ourselves, "What will make me happy? What do I really want from life?" In A Life of One’s Own, Marion Milner explores these questions and embarks on a seven-year personal journey to discover what it is that makes her happy.
On its first publication, W. H. Auden found the book "as exciting as a detective story" and, as Milner searches out clues, the listener quickly becomes involved in the chase. Using her own personal diaries, kept over many years, she analyses moments of everyday life and discovers ways of being, of looking, of moving, that bring surprising joy - ways which can be embraced by anyone.
With a new introduction by Rachel Bowlby, this classic remains a great adventure in thinking and living and will be essential for all those interested in reflecting on the nature of their own happiness - whether listeners are from a literary, an artistic, a historical, an educational or a psychoanalytic/psychotherapeutic background.

Wonderful piece of work.
Not only is it a landmark text - no doubt to have become more renown if she were Mr Milner - but a wonderful piece of ground and aesthetic work, both on the part of author and narrator. The text is by far enriched by the narrator; a dream when listened to. If you're dealing with a particularly hard ruck in life, I recommend a dose of this at night: leave it to play as you sleep; let it seep into your psyche. Perfect.

Making decisions for yourself.
I am a counsellor and this was recommended by a course about lonliness, I think this was because it highlights the value of being alone to be self reflective.
Although she seems like an academic she has written this in basic real terms using diary entries to show her development. She starts when she was 27 and this does sound like a 27 year olds thoughts. And you can hear her grow up with her thoughts basically as she develops conscious awareness and mindfulness over 7 years m
She ends with some good quotes from the Tao which I scribled down.
She was an English lady, and she seemed to have an English cultural history or personality, although she moved to America. That would be my only complaint that it had an American narrator, but it wasn't that important.
I am not sure if I would recommend it, although I liked it I did need patience to stick with it sometimes....I am glad I did.

Interesting and thought-provoking
Still worth reading from 87 years’ ago. However, I found choice of American narrator jarring and intrusive.
