Summary

When wealthy widower Captain Ralph Crewe first enrolls his little daughter Sara in Miss Minchin’s Select Seminary for Young Ladies, she is set to become the school's show pupil. But tragedy soon strikes: Captain Crewe passes away after losing his fortune, and young Sara is quickly forced into servitude by the cruel Miss Minchin.

To make it through her long days as a drudge, Sara imagines herself secretly a princess, and along the way learns to treasure true friends and the kindness of mysterious benefactors.

Exquisite!

I bought this book after reading The Secret Garden by the same author. This story was an absolute delight to listen to. The narrator is just perfect for the story. Love it so much. Listened to it on my walks. Will recommend it to my 10 year old daughter. Absolutely wonderful!!!

Greatly disappointed!

We’ve enjoyed the story up until we came to the chapter about the rat… what a great disappointment , mocking with the Bible! I can’t believe this book is recommended to children!!

Truly wonderful.

I'm very familar with the story but this is a wonderful adaptation of the original. The gentle pace and the readers natural ability to speak the languages of all the characters made it beautiful listening. I got it for my children but it reminded me of being little as my Grandad bought me the book as a child. I listened for my own bedtime story at 40. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you.xx

Beautiful, teaches children good character and compassion

This story is not only beautiful, it is rich in vocabulary, values, good character and kindness. My three girls loved and and learned about perseverance and compassion in the midst of hardship and unfair treatment at the hands of others.

We will listen to it again and again. That's why it is a classic. Excellent.

Some accent slippage

A magical book brought to life wonderfully in this recording. However, some of the accents used were a little incongruous; for example, a slightly gutter accent for one of the posh young boys and the occasional slippage into a possibly South African accent for some of the narrative and the young ladies’ voices. Overall an excellent reading though and very enjoyable.
