About this listen

Robert is a struggling writer living in Berlin with his wife and two young daughters. One night he meets Patrick, an enigmatic stranger with a sensational story to tell: a ghostwriter for a Russian oligarch - recently found hanged - who is now being followed. But is he really in danger? Patrick's life strikes Robert as a fabrication, but one that comes to obsess him. He decides to use the other man, and his story.... As his association with Patrick hurtles towards tragedy, Robert must decide: are actual events the only things that give a story life, and are some stories too dangerous to tell?

An elegant and atmospheric twist on the cat-and-mouse narrative, A Lonely Man is a novel of shadows, of the search for identity and the elastic nature of truth.

So enjoyed this!

This is a story that transitions seamlessly from the somewhat contented banality & frustrations of our writer protagonist’s life into the intrigue & tensions of a world of Russian oligarchs & suspected assassinations. The prose is beautiful & absorbs you entirely into both worlds. The narration lifts the words from the page & ensnares you into the thrilling tale of A Lonely Man. Could not stop listening.

If I had my time again…

I purchased this audio book after reading an intriguing review in the Speccie. But at no time during the performance did the plot build any tension or become addictive. In fact, if I listened at night, the narrator has the effect of sending me quickly to sleep. In all honesty, I wish I hadn’t started the book. It did not challenge my world view nor stimulate creative thoughts. It was a complete waste of my time.
