About this listen
It’s September 1592, and the dark streets of London are full of people up to no good. The redoubtable Sergeant Dodd and that dashing Elizabethan gunslinger Sir Robert Carey are in London where Carey’s powerful father, Lord Henry Hunsdon, wants him to solve the mystery of a corpse that has washed up from the Thames River onto Her Majesty’s privy steps. Meanwhile, Sergeant Dodd is plotting how to take suitable revenge for his mistreatment by the Queen’s Vice Chamberlain, Thomas Heneage. But no lawyer will sue against such a dangerous courtier—until a mysterious stranger offers help with suspicious eagerness. Now, Sergeant Dodd has to help Carey find the identity of the corpse and its murderer, while bringing a little taste of the Borders to his dealings with Heneage.

worth a listen if you're not paying!
An acceptable mystery, not world class though! The story was rather convoluted & I'm still not too sure if the main characters understood what was going on themselves! The narrator is not gifted with the ability to portray a natural Scottish action;, he definitely needs to practise!

For when you don't want to concentrate too much
Decent, well paced story. Fits well into real historical context but doesn't overly tax the brain. Thoroughly enjoyable with soothing narrator. Made me happy.

Great narration of a decent story
I loved the characters, but got lost at times. not the authors fault, I'd reckon. I started at book 5, where a start at the beginning would have enhanced my experience. I may well return to this series, as they become available. Narration was superb and the borders accent (usually a challenge) was the most impressive.

Well written and interesting storyline
Real shame most of the others in the series aren't available on Audible. I found myself transported back to Elizabethan London and really enjoyed the characters and the way the story developed. Off to get The Chorus of Innocents to see if it's as good.

Enjoyable but annoying
I think this would have been a lot more enjoyable if the rest of the series had been available on Audible. Why start at book book 5 in the seres? Only this and one other title appear to be available in this audio format. Really annoying.
