About this listen
Moving, honest and inspiring - this is a nurse’s story of life in a busy A&E department during the Covid-19 crisis.
Working in A&E is a challenging job, but nurse Louise Curtis loves it. She was newly qualified as an advanced clinical practitioner, responsible for life or death decisions about the patients she saw, when the unthinkable happened and the country was hit by the Covid-19 pandemic. The stress on the NHS was huge, and for the first time in her life, the job was going to take a toll on Louise herself.
In A Nurse’s Story she describes what happened next, as the trickle of Covid patients became a flood. And just as tragically, staff in A&E were faced with the effects of lockdown on society. They worried about their regulars, now missing, and saw an increase in domestic abuse victims and suicide attempts as loneliness hit people hard. By turns heartbreaking and heartwarming, this book shines a light on the compassion and dedication of hospital staff during such dark times.

Brilliant insight to life in A&E
I found the the stories interesting, it made me aware of things like the need for clinicians to spot abuse and to hold their own against unpleasant patients as well as handle medical emergencies.

Fantastic book from the heart
This book is amazing. For someone that works in the community it was lovely to read the other side. Louise speaks with honesty and I could often place myself back when I worked in A&E.
This book gives a true insight to life as a nurse and the heartbreak faced during the pandemic.
Thank you for such an honest account ~ thank you also for keeping us safe every day.

Fascinating, sad and so emotional
Through all the sadness within this book, there were many uplifting moments too.
As a nurse who worked as an AP throughout the pandemic also, I felt all the emotions that Louise did but at nowhere near the level that she had to. I take my hat off to her and all the wonderful healthcare workers. It’s beautifully written and narrated. Here we are in 2024 and sadly the NHS is failing thru poor management and lack of support from the Government. It will only be when it’s gone, that people will realise just how lucky we are.

Wonderful eye opener
Wonderful eye opener. Such an honest and humbling account of life in a hospital during Covid-19.
Loved Louise's dulcet tone. She must have such an amazing affect on patients with her calm manner.
I'm still gobsmacked at some peoples attitude to the pandemic. Those in denial I believe, should be held responsible for the dragging on and on. This would have been over sooner.
I owe my life to amazing hospital staff and will be forever grateful to the most wonderful nurses whom I would and did trust my life with.
Thank you NHS

Not what I expected
It's not a story of Covid but a nurse's life overall, quite slow at times.
