Better than I expected.

This was a pleasant surprise. For a start I have often found books narrated by the author are generally much poorer than those narrated by a professional voice artist. However, the author does a fair job. Congratulations for that.

The storyline works well, even though it swaps from one time period to another. The plot is fairly easy to follow. If I had one minor comment to make, it would be that the very slight supernatural aspect of the story might put some people off. However, I'm a bit of a supernatural/fantasy fan, so for me it worked out. It is really nothing that detracts from the way the plot plays out, but it isn't a straight historical hunt for the truth. Just be aware of that if you can't suspend belief.

What I did like was the fact that one of the modern protagonists is extremely flawed. Yet you find yourself rooting for both of the woman by the end.

Overall I would put this book into my 'I will listen to this again' category. And in a single word, I would mark this book as 'good'.

Fantastic book 👌

At first I had to get used to narrator’s voice but once the story picked up the pace, I did not even care about the voice any longer 😊 And even if the ending is a bit of a fantasy, I still thoroughly enjoyed the whole book. 5⭐️ out of 5

Pleasant enough but needed more spark.

The story is two arcs, a female pirate captain circa 1715 who falls in love with a rescued female slave. The second story set in present day which includes an building f/f relationship between a detective and a librarian investigating maps stolen from old books, as well as looking for the treasure map of the fore mentioned pirate.

The story is pleasant and a easy listen. The detail and historical research used for the pirate story is very well done and builds a lot of atmosphere, with excellent descriptions of the period, boat and pirate life.

The present day story is less interesting for me, and includes as road trip, a poodle and hunting in, and "borrowing" from libraries.

I struggled generally with believability in both stories. The pirate story was not edgy enough to seem realistic, although it is enjoyable, but perhaps more Jack Sparrow, then Black Beard. I think if it had injected more humor into this story it would have counter balanced the believability .

The present day story, did not have the strength to represent a engaging romance with conflict and resolution. This arc of the story itself I don't believe could stand on its own. For me I would have suggested reducing this story and use it narrative framing of the main pirate story.

The book is narrated by the author who does a good job. Again perhaps without the edge of other narrators who focus on this discipline.

In the end for me it was okay. I carried on listening to it, not really because I wanted to know what would happen, as story did not build dramatically to a conclusion but moved along a steady path, but I continued because it was a pleasing listen and I liked the narration.
