Summary

A brilliant new espionage thriller for fans of John Le Carre.

The intelligence service puts two years and over £100k into the training of new field officers. You're shown how to steal cars, strip weapons, hack bank accounts. There are courses on the use of blackmail and improvised explosives, two workshops solely dedicated to navigating by the stars. But nothing about what I had heard one old spy call whiplash. No one tells you how to go home.

There is a dark side to MI6 that needs men like Elliot Kane - mercurial, inquisitive, free floating. He's spent 15 years managing events overseas that never make the papers, deniable and deeply effective. Kane is a ghost in his own life, picking up and dropping personalities as each new cover story comes into play. But when a woman he loves, Joanna Lake, vanishes without a trace in Kazakhstan, he is forced centre stage.

Drawn ever deeper into a realm of deception, Kane moves from merely infiltrating events to steering them. He's used to a new mode of hybrid psychological warfare - but snowbound Kazakhstan presents unique challenges. Poised between China, Russia and the West, dictatorship and democracy, state intelligence and an increasingly powerful world of private agencies, it's impossible to work out who is manipulating who. And Kane's not the only one trying to figure out where Joanna Lake has gone or what she learned before disappearing.

Unable to trust anyone, hunted by his own colleagues, and with the life of someone he loves at stake, Kane needs to work out who is driving events, and why....

An unusual, internal variety of spy thriller

A 3 * rating should not put you off from reading this well written, articulate work.

The author sets himself a difficult task, indeed....and this reader appreciates his attempt to impose the interior conflicts and acts of self-discovery upon an exterior set of circumstances while navigating the exotic wastelands of Kazakhstan and cyberspace.

Told in a first person narrative by the protagonist, who might just as well wound up a self-questioning Oxford don of languages and Soviet history, if he hadn’t somehow fallen into the athe confusing career of a professional spy.

The problem is that Harriscreates the interior monologue of his protagonist so strong that the external plot just becomes the backdrop to it.

Finely narrated by Richard Cotle.

Best performance I've heard in audiobooks

You will need to concentrate to enjoy this book because there are a lot of strings to the complex story but it's worth it. Richard Coyle does a masterful job and the pace and detail in the text is terrific. Thoroughly enjoyed this one

A psych ops compendium

I thought I knew about social media, bots and political interference, but this book helped me understand how they come together and can change history (think Brexit, Trump and Russian invasion of Crimea). Frightening, absorbing and challenging; always interesting.

New discovery.

Captivating, multilayered and highly paced, this story makes for compelling listening. So pleased to find there are more in the series.

Utterly compelling

I held off on this audiobook initially, due to some of the negative reviews. When I eventually took the plunge, I was completely gripped by the complexities of the storyline. This is without a doubt the beat story of espionage that I have heard. The depth of detail in spy tradecraft, along with the cutting edge geopolitical issues drew me in and didn’t let me go.

The narration is outstanding - to the point where I will be looking to source other books narrated by Richard Coyle. I’ll certainly be keeping my fingers crossed for future Oliver Harris works narrated by Coyle.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. If you’re unsure, take the chance. Pay close attention to the intricacies of the storyline and you won’t be disappointed.

felt unstructured to me

wasn't really sure what was happening in this story or what it was about. maybe I wasn't concentrating but it didn't compel me to listen any more closely.

well worth sticking with

I read read some of the negative reviews and I can understand why people might have thought poorly about this. I very much enjoyed it. It all depends if you like your spy stories shaken or stirred!

enjoyable, well-researched, thought provoking

a slightly slow start, but turns into a well crafted and engaging thriller. good characters, excellent description of the scenery, an engaging (even if improbable) plot.
