wilderness adventure from the comfort of home
I really enjoyed Bill Bryson's 'A Walk in the Woods' because it combines humour which can make you laugh out loud (usually at the expense of fools whom Bryson meets along the way) and a real sense of the beauty and wonder of North America's natural hertiage.
Bryson's descriptions are able to pick out the most interesting details of places and people which entertain the listener throughout and his criticism of everything wrong with the US attitude to the environment also struck a cord with me. Despite some merciless attacks on government agencies who fail to protect America's wood lands, the author manages to convey a love for his native country which inspires you to follow in his footsteps. I will definately be downloading more Bill Bryson books in the future.

A walk in the woods
This is my favourite audio book. I love Bryson's dry wit mixed with his often critical assessment of how Americans fail to look after the woods and wildlife they should be protecting. I can understand his desire to walk the Appalachian Trail and listening to this audio book often inspires me to go walking myself (though not 2,000 miles).
Bryson and Stephen Katz set off into the american wilderness only to find they are way out of their depth. With dangers such as bears, mountain lions, moose and more importantly Bryson's own vivid imagination the pair stumble their way along the trail. This book is packed with humour.
William Roberts' narration is perfect and helps to put Bill Bryson's audio books as a must have for any a.b. collection. I hope Audible get more of Bryson's books, Their worth a listen.

Another great Bryson adventure..
A Walk in the Woods chronicles Bill Bryson, along with his long time friend Steve Catz, trekking the Appalachian Trail. Much of it describes their adventures in trying to avoid encounters with bears and other native animals, but also looks at the effect humans have had on the great outdoors over the years.
Laced with typical Bryson wit and humour, this is definitely a worthwhile listen.
You'll want to lace up your waking boots after this one!

Unexpected but another Bryson Hit
What did you like most about A Walk in the Woods?
His friend Catz adds extra spice to the menu of Bryson's dry wit.
What other book might you compare A Walk in the Woods to, and why?
Him & Me. Unfortunately we do not get Catz's personal view, but the listener can imagine.

I avoided this Bryson offering, as I thought it would be a little dull. I mean a "A Walk In The Woods"! How wrong could I be. I would of liked Catz to have his own voice in this book, as I think that would have made it even funnier.

brilliant bryson, terrible narration
I struggled how to rate this. I love bill and this is one of his funniest books but the narration is just awful. the previous version narrated by bill himself is fantastic. unfortunately this narrator has the intonation all wrong which just makes the story less funny! I also find his voice really irritating. upsettingly all the new unabridged versions of bills travels books seem to be narrated by this same person, nooooo! audible please get bill bryson to read these!!!

a new bryson fan
i have only jsut started to read bill bryson. this book was fun and amusing as was the other i read (small town america) and i think i will read the rest. yes there are a lot of references to trees etc but he is walking the appilation trail. the reader, whom i think must read all his books, reads it so well.

Loved this story
Would you listen to A Walk in the Woods again? Why?
Yes, I would listen to it again. The reader was excellent, and it was a very uplifting story with a lot of humour.
What was one of the most memorable moments of A Walk in the Woods?
The laughs out aloud. There were so many times that I would suddenly burst out laughing over different bits, such as them discovering that they had left most of the food behind.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
When Cats bought the underwear for the large woman and discovered she was married when the husband came looking for him, and he had to hid from the husband. He was suddenly very desperate to get walking again.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Stephen (Cats) opening up to Bill and admitting that his life was a struggle and how difficult it was to stay away from alcohol. It was a very human moment with lots of feeling.
Any additional comments?
I would recommend this book to everyone, it is full of history, humour and also a spectrum of honest human feelings from repulsion to compassion, it is a very real book. You can really imagine and feel their journey in not just the physical sense but emotional as well.

Held your attention but low on novelty.
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Yes and No. The premise is OK but the content feels thin. It feels padded with geographical facts making it neither a clear travelogue or an exposition of the trail. If you want a hint of the challenge facing you on the trail it gives you a very personal feel, but otherwise leave it.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Narration matched the book just fine.

Unless he plans to finish the walk NO. However, its much much better than the film which was rather amateur.

Anyone can have the great adventure.
Would you listen to A Walk in the Woods again? Why?
I will be listening to this book again. It has so much detail, so many interesting facts that I feel I have hardly touched it with only one listening.
What did you like best about this story?
I love the little everyday details that made me feel I was there on the trail. And I liked the excursions off the track to the quirky history all around the Appalachian trail.
What about William Roberts’s performance did you like?
William Roberts made this book for me. He brought so much humour and character to his task. I've heard Bill Bryson narrate his other books, but he could never bring the professional style to the job that William Roberts achieves.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I listen to a chapter at a time on my train commute, but sometimes if I haven't finished the chapter I will wait on the platform and continue listening till the chapter ends.
Any additional comments?
Inspires me to do an adventure walk myself. But definitely not the Appalachain trail - too hard! I liked his description of a walk in Europe though.

Brilliant as always
I'm already a fan of Bill and read the book years ago, but this is how good it was - while doing a non-stop 100km charity walk, I saved this for the midnight to dawn section and it was so entertaining and engrossing that I pretty much forgot I was on a rutted track in the pitch dark and had been walking for 20 hours. All I remember of those hours are Bill's stories of preparing for and slogging up and down Appalachian mountains which not only made what I was doing seem really easy but I'm pretty sure made me the only person on the track who was laughing out loud. For that alone I have to give it 5 stars.

Informatively adventurous
...and funny too. Bryson adds humour and information throughout the travels they take. Always a little qwerk around each bend.

What a Great Story
I have read this book several times over the years, and I enjoy it every-time. It is a wonderful book and I love his humor.
