Puts a spell on you so you can't help but like it

I loved this book. I like witch cozy mysteries but this was something different. Most cozy books are centred around a teenage witch who has just come in to her powers but I like the authors twist on the subject. It made a nice and unusual change for the main character to be fifty. She still has problems controlling or understanding her powers but I liked that fact that the character was more mature and it made her problems more believable and not just teenage crushes. I liked the characters, especially Echo the cat. The mystery was good and I liked the way each clue lead to another one, I had guessed who the killer was but didn't really know why until the end, it was just a feeling. I hope there are more books in the series.
Cascade Lorne after a messy marriage is looking for some excitement in her life with her new found freedom. She had no idea that by accepting the parcel just how much excitement she was about to unleash into her. She wakes up on the floor to find an old lady asking her about the new witch that has just come into her powers. At fifty Cassie is a bit old to be that witch but with everything tell her she is the old lady whisk her off to meet the sirens, the members of the high council might be able to explain what is going on. Rather than help they try to fob her of on her distant relatives and when that doesn't work they tr binding her powers and send her home with a talking cat to keep her out of trouble. This doesn't work and she becomes the number one suspect when the Grand siren is killed and she is found standing over the body. The sheriff is to busy with founders day to launch a proper investigation and one involving witches. So Cassie has to learn to control her powers and clear her name before the counsel sentence her to death. Can she solve the mystery behind her sudden power? A power that runs in families? With help from the talking cat and her new and mysterious neighbour, she might just get to see her birthday.
I liked the narrator and thought she sounded just right for the part of Cassie and her friends.
