Summary

A Year of Marvellous Ways is the much anticipated and utterly beguiling new novel from Sarah Winman, author of the international best seller When God Was a Rabbit.

Cornwall, 1947. Marvellous Ways is a 90-year-old woman who's lived alone on a remote creek for nearly all her life. Recently she's taken to spending her days sitting on a mooring stone by the river with a telescope. She's waiting for something - she's not sure what, but she'll know it when she sees it.

Drake is a young soldier left reeling by the war. He's agreed to fulfil a dying man's last wish and hand deliver a letter to the man's father in Cornwall. But Drake's journey doesn't go to plan and sees him literally wash up in Marvellous' creek, broken in body and spirit.

When Marvellous comes to his aid, an unlikely friendship grows between the two. Can Drake give Marvellous what she needs to say good-bye to the world, and can she give him what he needs to go on?

Magical story & powerful narration.

Fantastic mix of reality and fantasy. As the author narrates the story I really got a sense of the characters and her intention. Did take me a few hours in to be truly captured but from then on I truly was. Can’t wait to explore more by this author.

Absolutely incredible.

I have always loved reading but when Sarah Winman's warm, engaging and completely encompassing voice brings the characters in her stories to to life, my enjoyment of her writing is total. I listened to Still Life several weeks ago, and was so enchanted I moved straight onto A Year of Marvellous Ways. It's hard to put into words how utterly beautiful this tale is. The characters, the story, the history, the incredible descriptions, the language, the love and the imagination. It made me smile, brought me to tears, and got into my soul. I will never forget Marvellous Ways and am forever indebted to Sarah Winman for her exceptional writing. When God was a Rabbit is my next listen.

Don't expect a Happy Read

How exquisitely Beautiful Sarah Winman writes. Her words are poetry, incandescent like a candle flame. Wistful and thoughtful and so heartbreakingly poignant and sad. I listened to this on Audible and it was also narrated so beautifully by tte Author. The story touched my heart. I loved it, all the while feeling sorrowful inside. That's the mark of a Brilliant writer, if they can make you Feel. Feel any emotion and all emotion at once even. Sarah Winman did this to me with this story. I loved Marvellous Ways, just her name evoked so many thoughts in my head. I would truly recommend this book to anyone wanting to read something remarkable. My only word of warning.....don't expect a Happy read.

The best narration I’ve heard

This a beautifully written book even if sad at times. The language is almost poetic and Sarah Winman brings it to life. Her ability to move from one accent to the other, the change in intonation and tone for each character is superb. I especially loved the voice and tone she used for Marvellous. I really enjoyed listening to this book. It may not be for those who look fir a plot or a ‘page turner’
I really enjoyed being in the moment and was deeply moved.

Absorbed and adored.

I utterly adored this book. I will call it a future classic. It is a book of traditional story-weaving and of fresh style. The ribbons of language threaded through the book are like an hypnotic spell-casting. It is a beautiful love story and a joyous celebration of a long well-lived life. Though many may question the fullness of our heroine's life at the beginning, our narrator reveals a memoir of seemingly insignificant coincidences blossoming into affirming adventures, accompanied by flawed but unquestioningly loved companions, and scored with heart-wrenching loss. We are gifted a mystical insight with a confidence in itself that never questions, and we are never doubtful. I want to go back to the beginning and capture so many of the phrases, because they are beautiful. I will return to this book soon. And it will be one I continue to recommend.

The most beautiful book I've ever read.

Such a special book. my favourite book before was 'When God was a rabbit' but this is just absolutely stunning. So incredibly beautifully written. Touches of romance and magic but the way she marries words together to describe is like nothing I've read before. I've just bought two paper copies to send to friends. fabulous narration too.
