Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

When Englishman Chris Broad landed in a rural village in northern Japan he wondered if he'd made a huge mistake. With no knowledge of the language and zero teaching experience, was he was about to be the most quickly fired English teacher in Japan's history?

Abroad in Japan charts a decade of living in a foreign land and the chaos and culture clash that comes with it. Packed with hilarious and fascinating stories, this book seeks out to unravel one the world's most mysterious and impenetrable cultures.

Spanning 10 years and 47 prefectures, Chris takes us from the chilling summit of Mount Fuji to the chaotic neon-lit streets of Tokyo. With blockbuster moments such as a terrifying North Korean missile incident, a Japanese national TV experience gone horribly wrong and a week spent with Japan's biggest movie star, Ken Watanabe, Abroad in Japan is an extraordinary and informative journey through the Land of the Rising Sun.

Critic reviews

From wide-eyed exchange teacher to seasoned youtuber, Chris Broad explores Japan in all its quirky glory, surviving earthquakes, North Korean missile alerts, cat cafe allergies and Love Hotel evictions. Endlessly fascinating! (Will Ferguson, author of Hokkaido Highway Blues)
Fascinating, fact-packed and very funny. Broad's wry humour, in-depth knowledge and adept storytelling make him an engaging guide to the bewildering Japanese experience. Accurately captures the excitement and dream-like disorientation of a foreigner discovering Japan. An excellent and enjoyable read for the Japan-curious. I loved it and learned a lot. (Sam Baldwin, author of For Fukui's Sake: Two years in rural Japan)
Chris Broad's wry, self-deprecating memoir carves a unique path across Japan bringing him into contact with far too many cats, heartening renewal in Tohoku, and even pizza with Ken Watanabe. This is a thoroughly contemporary book, a memoir of life in Japan that couldn't have been written at any other point in history. (Iain Maloney, author of The Only Gaijin in the Village)

A cosy, entertaining read

As a long time fan of the ‘Abroad in Japan’ YouTube channel I immediately pre-ordered this book. I wasn’t sure if the channels themes and tone would make a great read, but in the end I couldn’t put it down and finished it over a weekend. Joining Chris on his meandering and sometimes bumbling journey to build a new life in Japan was fun, transporting, and occasionally inspiring. The book deserves to find a wide audience. It’s uncomplicated, heartwarming, and hopeful.

if you like the channel, you'll like this

been an Abroad in Japan subscriber for aaages now. This was a really enjoyable walk back through Chris' career as a teacher on the Jet program and then through YouTube. if you like the channel, you'll enjoy this. It focuses more on the teaching side and just little stories here and there, and on the themes of isolation & culture shock, more than focusing on the YouTube stuff too much. Overall a really enjoyable listen.

As a fan of Chris's work this doesn't dissapoint

I've been watching Abroad in Japan on youtube and listening to the podcast for years now and was a bit worried this book may be full of repeated stories but there's loads in here that I've never heard before with lots of interesting insights into Japanese culture.

Superb Adventure, From the affable Broad.

Read the book and enjoyed it immensely.
This audiobook took it to another level hearing Chris read the adventures out loud, Knowing how he had to struggle to write this on a charity ride, he knows how to tell a story properly, and it's not some Youtuber cashing in. Thanks for making me feel that I should have taken that trip to Japan as a younger person. Love it 10/10

The full story abroad

I've been following Chris Broad since the early days of his youtube channel and thought I knew most of his story after all these years but the book still offered new insight. It's wonderfully read and especially the early parts about arriving and life in rural Japan as a teacher are really interesting. The parts about adapting to the culture and the difficulty of living in a county so different from your own are facinating and you get the feeling that you're there with him.
Oh and the voice he does for Ryotaro is hilarious!
Sharla is mentioned briefly twice so if you're looking for the inside scoop on their relationship this isn't the book for you.

Thankyou over the years

I've watched your YouTube channel for many years now, I've only missed the first two years of abroad in Japan so I've seen it's many changes over that time. Even though I've never met the guy I feel like I know him and his friends. Being a fellow Englishman myself I love his sense of humour and sarcasm. Listening to this book brought back many happy hours over the years watching his content and reminiscing about the stories he has told. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I'm so pleased I preordered it. Listening to the acknowledgements even brought a tear to my eyes. One of the best books I've listened to on audible. God bless you Chris and the rest of you.

As funny and educational as his videos

I have been following Chris on YouTube, his podcast for many years now and I was lucky to assist to one of his London shows and he never disappoints. He is entertaining and educational in equal measure. This book takes you through a rollercoaster of emotions. 10/10 will recommend it to all Japan lovers.

Mr Affable at it again

if you are a fan of abroad in Japan the audiobook is definitely for you, this is effectively an 8 hour episode of abroad in Japan. with Chris having written and narrated the book it's full of his classic British wit and is such a refreshing change to so many dry celebrity autobios.

A wonderful listen into the beginnings of Chris's journey. A very relatable set of feelings for anyone taking the plunge into the new be that a new job, career, country, anything really and would highly recommend if you are on the cusp of doing something new and need a little motivation to just do it.
