But when she accepts a job covering a string of macabre murders in Portland, it’s impossible for Marissa not to remember. Everything is eerily familiar. The same underground lairs. Summary
You want to know what the worst thing is? It's not the embarrassment, or the looks on people's faces when I tell them what happened. It isn't the pain of him not being there - loneliness is manageable.
The worst thing is not knowing why.
When Justin walks out on Alice on their honeymoon, with no explanation apart from a cryptic note, Alice is left alone and bewildered, her life in pieces.
Then she meets Evelyn, a visitor to the gallery where she works. It's a seemingly chance encounter, but Alice gradually learns that Evelyn has motives, and a heartbreaking story, of her own. And that story has haunting parallels with Alice's life.
As Alice delves into the mystery of why Justin left her, the questions are obvious. But the answers may lie in the most unlikely of places...

Mediocre at best
I must have missed the point to this book. I was waiting for it to get somewhere when it abruptly ended. Story was weak. I think there was supposed to be a twist, but if it was supposed to be then it was highly predictable. The message of the story seemed to be that being unfaithful to your spouse is fine as long as you are in love, which I find morally dubious. Naration was okay. I listened to this on Kindle Unlimited and do a lot of driving; if I had paid for this or had little time to listen, I would have felt quite rather duped.

Takes me home
As a person who was born and brought up in the area where the story is set it was well discribed and made me quite homesick. The story starts off good, goes down hill bounces about a bit them bounces back up again if you get my meaning.
Not bad but not good either.

I kept thinking 'what the heck???'
For better or worse, After You Left will keep you on your toes. Is it a mystery? Well, yeah- but not the one you think it is. Is it literary? Maybe; some aspects of the book are quite fine while others are straight out of the chicklit handbook. Is it engaging? Yes- except when it isn't. And last, 'What did she say?' Narrator Knoweldon does an excellent job but in that whispery-childwoman voice that keeps me rewinding.
Yep, I am ambivalent about After You Left. The story line seemed forced at times but the storytelling was excellent. I'll certainly try more Carol Mason novels because despite everything I've said, After You Left is better than 2/3 of the books I listen to.

I wanted to like this book but couldn't
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
Maybe someone with a lot of patience, who doesn't look for the narrator to match the character's voice.
Would you ever listen to anything by Carol Mason again?
If she better fit a character, yes.
Any additional comments?
The story's premise was good and well-intended, but the narrator was quite distracting. She couldn't emote well enough.

Just good enough to not fall asleep on.
This book has good bones. There's lots of good twist but the characters are boring and the story ends up being anti-climatic. One of the biggest problems was none of the characters had any fight. It's a book I want drama. I was extremely disappointed that I actually lost sleep listening to the last chapter. It just totally killed the whole book for me. I was looking for more closure from the Alice and Justin story but instead it was just a redundant telling of the E&E storyline.

Mesmerizing and Thrilling
A beautifully written novel that weaves together its stories in a way I could never imagined. It felt real, as if I were there watching and listening, not at all contrived. It also kept me up late, having to read on to understand more, wondering what might happen next. What each person would do, what decisions they would make.
This was my first book by Carol Mason. I will be look for another. Also my first book narrated, so beautifully, by Elizabeth Knowelden.

Wow. Wonderful.
I don’t know the last time I enjoyed a book so much. There were times I laughed, times I swooned, and times I cried. Genuinely, shed tears.
If you’ve ever known someone or loved someone who suffers from dementia, this novel will definitely, reach into your heart. “Memory keepers” is what my grandmother called the loved ones, of those with dementia, and Alzheimer’s. I won’t give any more than that away. But I will say this, you won’t regret reading, or listening to this one.
