Summary

Bloomsbury presents Against the Tide by Roger Scruton and Mark Dooley, read by Kris Dyer.

The definitive edition of the late Sir Roger Scruton's philosophical and political essays and reviews, now collected in one volume, edited by Mark Dooley.

The philosopher Roger Scruton was the leading conservative thinker of the post-war years. In this audiobook are assembled the very best of his essays and commentaries, arranged thematically. The selection has been made and edited by Mark Dooley, Scruton’s literary executor.

Throughout this collection, Scruton proves himself to be at his most scintillating and controversial. He writes with passion and conviction about such varied topics as feminism, racism, fascism, Tony Blair, Jeremy Corbyn and Donald Trump and takes aim at those who defy conservative common sense in favour of liberal falsehoods.

This audiobook shows Scruton at his most brilliant and demonstrates how his influence will remain strong and enduring.

Eloquent to the end

I found this book moving to read/listen. The grace with which he writes/wrote allows one to understand and empathise even if one does not always completely agree with the statement or conclusion. He is the last of a dying breed and I have not found another of his like since. Excellent book, thoroughly recommend.

Nice writing style

Whilst I didn’t agree with everything, Roger Scruton has a nice writing style which is direct, thoughtful and moves at a nice pace.

Extremely Irritating Narrator

If you want to listen to C3PO doing an impression of C3PO, then I imagine you’ll enjoy this recording a lot. If not, don’t bother!

Horrible narration for interesting writing

It’s like a children’s tv show where someone plays the part of what an American thinks a British person.

So incongruous with the ideas being expressed.

Great book, awful narration

whilst the book is full of insight and sheer energy I found the narration somewhat lacking. Great shame
