About this listen

HIGHLY ANTICIPATED OPRAH DAILY PICK FOR 2023

This is the age of vice, where pleasure and power are everything, and the family ties that bind can also kill

New Delhi, 3 a.m. A speeding Mercedes jumps the kerb, and in the blink of an eye five people are dead. It's a rich man's car, but when the dust settles there is no rich man at all, just a shell-shocked servant who cannot explain the strange series of events that led to this crime. Nor can he foresee the dark drama that is about to unfold.
Deftly shifting through time and perspective in contemporary India, Age of Vice is an epic, action-packed story propelled by the seductive wealth, startling corruption, and bloodthirsty violence of the Wadia family-loved by some, loathed by others, feared by all.

In the shadow of lavish estates, extravagant parties, predatory business deals, and calculated political influence, three lives become dangerously intertwined: Ajay is the watchful servant, born into poverty, who rises through the family's ranks. Sunny is the playboy heir who dreams of outshining his father, whatever the cost. And Neda is the curious journalist caught between morality and desire. Against a sweeping plot fueled by loss, pleasure, greed, yearning, violence, and revenge, will these characters' connections become a path to escape, or a trigger of further destruction?

Equal parts crime thriller and family saga, transporting readers from the dusty villages of Uttar Pradesh to the urban energy of New Delhi, Age of Vice is an intoxicating novel of gangsters and lovers, false friendships, forbidden romance, and the consequences of corruption. It is binge-worthy entertainment at its literary best.

Critic reviews

"Age of Vice is a good old-fashioned gangster story, impossible to put down. It's a novel garlanded with Shakespearean flourishes-star-crossed lovers, secret identities, complicated conspiracies-exploring timeless questions of family, loyalty, and fate." (Rumaan Alam, National Book Award finalist and New York Times bestselling author of Leave the World Behind)

"This is a masterpiece. Age of Vice is epic but intimate, its glittering, sharp scenes building into an astonishing geometry. It is an unforgettable story of corruption and excess, of ruthless power and the will to fight back." (Flynn Berry, New York Times bestselling author of Northern Spy)

"This book. This epic, crazy, shocking, mind-blowing, brutal, tender, heartbreaking book is one of the best I've read." (Marlon James, Booker Prize winner and New York Times bestselling author of Moon Witch, Spider King)

Brilliant brilliant start to 2023

This was such an incredible listen. Well narrated, beautifully written and such a complex intricate storyline that covered so many characters with ease. Kapoor should be so proud, they have done a fantastic job with this book. Will be looking out for more.

Narration was excellent

This could have been such a wonderful book, and the first half gave every indication that this would be the case. But then all the main characters hit rock bottom and the story rambled off with lesser characters who are barely relevant and seemingly contrived to lengthen the story. It does give some insight into the corruption of India and the difference between the poor and rich, but, far from complex, it was rambling, superficial almost as if the author was scared to dig deeper and so, unconvincing. The main characters were so unlikeable, so deserving of their fates that I really didn’t care about any one of them. There are far better, more convincing books on this theme.

Epic

This book is an absolute epic. Multiple timelines, perspectives and a brilliant story. The narrator does an excellent job with so many voices bar the Scottish accent. This book is what it says on the label vices the most immoral and wicked behaviour

absolutely brilliant

Loved this from beginning to end. It is an epic tale full of beautiful writing but still very much in a certain genre of crime that reminds me very much of Mario Puzo (the Godfather), Dennis Lehane or Don Winslow but it also stands very much apart from all those not only in the setting (India) but also (for me) the fact that it is much more subtle. It is also a story about family bonds, love, betrayal and relationships.
The narration was absolutely excellent throughout and nothing to fault.
I really can't wait to read more from this author.

Starts off well but downhill in 2nd half

Left me a little disappointed at the end.
I thought it started off well and built up the main characters only to go nowhere at the end

The Corleones from Uttar Pradesh

Brilliantly conceived, written and narrated.
If you have ever wondered about the new India... The wealthy, educated, cryptoweb fixated generation and it's juxtaposition to the old realities of poverty, caste, crime and colonialism.... Read this book.
