Summary

Ahren can hardly believe his luck. His normal life consists of being beaten up by his drunkard father or bullied by the village lads. But at the annual suitability tests for apprenticeships, the young boy finds himself selected by Falk, the guardian of the forest, to be his apprentice and his world is turned upside down.

From his new master he learns the skills of archery and how to fight the Dark Ones. And then, on the day of the Spring Ceremony there is another unexpected turn of events. He touches the Stone of the Gods and it illuminates for the first time ever. It isn't long before a cantankerous wizard turns up and urges Falk and Ahren into action. There is no time to waste, for something evil is awakening.

The unlikely trio begin their dangerous journey to Evergreen, the elfish kingdom to get the elves' help. But time is running out. He, Who Forces has his eyes trained on Ahren and nothing will stop him from destroying the young man.

A fantasy quest

It took the first chapter before I really got into it but then I was hooked. Can’t wait for the next book in the series. Well narrated, characters that grow on you and a quest in the tradition of great fantasy novels.

Great story, great narration

This is a gripping adventure with characters you will grow to love. This narrator is one of my favourites… could listen to him all day! Am looking forward to the next instalment.

Good

The story is pretty good and well written but if like me you have read as many fantasy novels as I have over the years there really isn’t anything new here.

Engaging

I read a lot of fantasy and this is a good one: while not as exciting as some, the plot is engaging and it’s read really well. There are lots of sequels so I’m looking forward to the overall saga of it over several books. This one lays the foundations and builds the characters well, which I find satisfying- you don’t want stories that skips the eventual hero’s development. There are elves and dwarves, magic and malevolence, so it’s right up my street.

It was amazing and I loved it

I’m usually not a big fan or reading so I got audible. And after my first two books, the standard was set quite high, and then I listened to this masterpiece. The characters are amazing and fleshed out to the point where needless exposition is not needed. They all have distinct personalities and the world and it’s rules are amazingly fleshed out. The main character is brilliant and has one of the best arcs of ever seen. It’s an amazing book and I think you should listen to it and it’s sequel “ the naming “ as they are both amazing

Enjoyable story

It may be a classic good Vs evil kind of book but I found the story good escapism, has likable characters who develop over time and despite not being the most complicated story I've ever read it still kept me reading and listening wanting to know what happened next. The narration is well done too.
