About this listen

Just before the outbreak of World War II, Fabienne, a young German girl, flees her abusive, widowed father and takes a job caring for disabled children in a home on the outskirts of Berlin. When Jurgen, a young soldier, turns up on the doorstep of the home asking if he can take Fabienne to the local dance, the women running the organisation agree against their better judgement. Soon the young couple is in love.

With the rise of Hitler and the Nazi party comes persecution of anyone seen to be “inferior to the German master race”. This includes children with disabilities, and Fabienne and the women flee the Nazi wrath, taking the vulnerable children with them on an epic journey across Germany. Some will survive the Nazi punishments, others will not. But in the background is her relationship with Jurgen. Will he stay loyal or betray her to his masters in the Nazi party? When she hears that her father is in jail awaiting the death penalty for murder, she is forced to come out of hiding to visit him and make her peace. The risk is enormous, but in doing so, Fabienne learns some extraordinary news, which changes the course of her life.

Touching subject

well handled on a harrowing episode in history, narration was a bit slow, so sped it up to 1.2 speed, and apart from a few Germans sounding like Gordies, it was well read. The story was great, and I liked the prehistory of the characters half way through.

Tough subject tackled sensitively

I really enjoyed this book and my interest in the WW2 setting was something that drew me to it. The well-documented horrors of the Holocaust are tackled from a very personal position, as we follow Fabienne through her struggles. I felt that the inclusion of the added traumas she suffered at the hands of her family made the listener even more invested in her story. A well-researched, emotional and memorable book.

A Hard Subject

Brilliant story. A very hard subject to write about but so well done. A different angle to most books about the holocaust, a topic that many people might not know about. Well done to PGR Wright.

Ive seen films and documentaries about Nazi Germany some of which cover the things that happened to disabled people.
This is the first time I've read a book covering the subject and I'm glad I picked this one for my first one very well written would 💯 recommend it to anyone.

very convincing and thought provoking

A very convincing and thought provoking novel set in Germany during the Nazi regime. Gives an insight into the brutal suffering inflicted upon ordinary citizens who didn't fit the design of the pure Aryan race.

Brilliant!

A brilliantly told story of the suffering of people under the Nazi regime. Obviously well researched it tells of the trials and tribulations faced by good hearted women looking after disadvantaged children, unwanted by their parents because of various disabilities they are taken in to a home called Almighty. They are forced to move on as Hitlers policies toward disabled people mean certain death. Fabien is a loveable character, worked hard by a father who doesn't show her any love she gets a job at Almighty and that is the start of heartbreak, tribulation and triumph for her. S D Cousins's narration is excellent, perfect for the telling of this story. Highly recommended with a Tissue required warning, espescially at the end of the book. Looking forward to the second book which I shall be listening to and reviewing later this week.☺
