A tour-de-force of historical imagination, this is the story of three young men at the dawn of the French Revolution. Georges-Jacques Danton: zealous, energetic, debt-ridden. Easy-read, fast moving detective thriller.
I can see why it's so popular - easy-read, fast-moving psychological detective thriller.
My first Patterson. As a library worker for several years, I've avoided reading this author, who fills several shelves by himself, but recently I also listened to a Lee Child and saw this first Alex Cross was also coming out on Audible for the first time. Why not?
As a student of psychology myself, I was very interested in the villain of the piece, and did enjoy travelling along with Cross as he talks us through his thought process when two children of famous/important parents are kidnapped from their school by a teacher.
The twists didn't all come as surprises, the writing was pretty straightforward and standard, but the story did keep its intensity and it was very cinematic (probably why it has been filmed!). I liked the constant flipping from Cross to the kidnapped girl to the 'villain'.
I don't think I'll be reading any more but I'm glad now to be able to say I've sampled a new author. It was a quick few hours as it flowed well, despite its length.
The Audible version was a good listen for this style of narration, as Cross talks to us with his thoughts a lot, but I did find that the reader used the same voice for more than one character, not making them distinct enough. I could work out who was speaking, but thought this was unusual in an audiobook narrator.
With thanks to Nudge Books for providing a sample Audible copy.

Disappointed
I originally read the hardback version of this book years ago and loved it and subsequently bought all the following Alex Cross novels, it’s hard to put my finger on it but this audio version just seemed flat and boring, I persevered until the end but just didn’t enjoy it and was left disappointed.

Gripping read
I thought the characters were credible, the bad ones were scarily so.
The story’s pace gripped me from start to finish. The twists and turns caused my heart to beat faster at times. I shed a tear for the rescue
The reading of the book by Ako Mitchell added to the excitement and suspense.
As always, James Patterson did it again. EXCELLENT!

Excellent
This is the first Alex Cross book I have listened (have read the womens murder club) and had this over Christmas as a way to relax.
The story line had me guessing from start to finish and even the ending came as a surprise.
Without giving the game away, 2 children are taken in broad daylight in site of teachers and nothing is said, which starts a story of twists and turns.
I believe that there is also a film but not seen that - but totally recommend the book
