About this listen
Jeramiah Stone was living out his dream of raising a family on a farm in central Bucks County Pennsylvania. Having served in the French and Indian war years before, he had seen enough of death and the horrors of war for one life time. His goal now was to live peacefully with his wife, raising their three sons, and daughter. Just prior to his oldest sons wedding day, they awake one morning to find their daughter had eloped during the night. It was one thing to leave to get married, but she left with a young man that in support of the Tory military unit recently formed in the area.
All around the area, men are signing up to fight for either the Crown or the Colonies, and heading off to war. Just a few months after the war starts, they receive visitors in the way of a large group of Redcoats. Arriving on horseback and followed by wagons, they have come to gather supplies for the army. Collecting all the food the family had for the coming winter, wasn't enough for them though. They also wanted any valuables they could find, and rob the family of anything worth something.
By the time they leave, the family has no food, no money, and one of their sons is badly wounded, and may not survive. No longer can they not choose sides, the Redcoats have forced them into now choosing sides and taking action.
