About this listen
An empire in flames. A prisoner of war. An unbreakable will to escape.
At just 15, Eskara Helsene fought in the greatest war mankind has ever known - and lost. There is only one place her enemies would send a Sourcerer as powerful as her: the Pit, a prison sunk so deep into the earth the sun is a distant memory. Now, she finds herself stripped of her magic; a young girl surrounded by thieves, murderers, and worse. In order to survive she will need to make new allies, play the inmates against each other, and find a way out.
Her enemies will soon find out that Eskara is not so easily broken.

Astounding
I'm surprised at who little I knew about this book yet loved it so much.
Glad the trilogy is finished as I'm going straight into book 2

Great Grimdark
Good story, great prose and a great narrator for an incredible book for lovers of Grimdark. You can find the details somewhere else, but those are the basics I look for on a review
I'll give it 4.5 Stars for some repetition here and there (Yes Eska, we know you were very naive, no need to tell us again)
I you're looking for your next Grimdark fix, this is it... an amazing look into the heart of the human soul

perfect example of grim dark
when someone asks me what grimdark is ill suggest this book in future. dark, gritty, humorous. Also the level of performance here is top notch, I'll put moira quirk with Steven Pacy for one that really can act a audio book and make you feel like you're there. Great stuff. on to the next one.

Great Start
I have to say first that I found the performance excellent which probably lifted the over all score a star
That said good stoy, likeable unlikeable main POV character and interesting story line. I like the character interactions and the looking back with hindsight perspective.
Shades of Patrick Rothuss going on. Not quite the same level but atleast have 4 more books
to take us on. Looking forward to it.

The Pit
This story is very slow paced, not much happened in this first book, I know the author is setting up the character's and story but I found it hard to get through.

Surprised how much I loved this
Think this series may be my next obsessive follow.
Thought it would be a basic fantasy but it's very character focused with an interesting magic system that obviously has great depth. Not a huge fan of the future self narrating framing device however the actual narrator was fantastic and added genuine emotion to all necessary areas.

Marmite!
The antagonist at first is compelling, A young girl stuck in the pits using her wits to survive. Yet she has no wits and faces down very dangerous people with stubborness and surliness. Yet she survives down there for six months. The amount of introspection and especially retrospection throws one out of the emersion with: "Really? Again? Just how stupid is she?"
However it is a compelling story.
With many more authors writing in similar genres and better antagonists. I'm not sure I'll invest in the sequel. Maybe if it ends up in the plus catalogue.

A decent beginning.
It's interesting to see a story told from the perspective of the anti-hero/ antagonist. The mc is fittingly confused and contradicted with her thoughts and feelings and perhaps will end up even less reliable a narrator over time.
On the other hand the mc feels more one note than not and hearing her make one more wrong life decision after another gets exhausting. There is a hint for the cause of her extreme impulsiveness and edginess, but that's something i'll perhaps find more about from another book.

Very enjoyable. Gritty and Raw
I listened to this on audiobook as it was included with my audible membership. The description interested me and I went into it not knowing what to expect, other than the blurb.
The story is very enjoyable. Extremely gritty and raw. This is a great escape story, with friendship being a main point and what people would do in a chance of escape.
The narrator was brilliant, really enjoyed listening to her read the story. 3.5 stars.
