Summary

Françoise Malby-Anthony never expected to find herself responsible for a herd of elephants with a troubled past. A chic Parisienne, her life changed forever when she fell in love with South African conservationist Lawrence Anthony. Together they founded a game reserve but after Lawrence’s death, Françoise faced the daunting responsibility of running Thula Thula without him. Poachers attacked their rhinos, their security team wouldn’t take orders from a woman and the authorities were threatening to cull their beloved elephant family. On top of that, the herd’s feisty new matriarch Frankie didn’t like her.

In this heart-warming and moving book, Françoise describes how she fought to protect the herd and to make her dream of building a wildlife rescue centre a reality. She found herself caring for a lost baby elephant who turned up at her house, and offering refuge to traumatised orphaned rhinos, and a hippo called Charlie who was scared of water. As she learned to trust herself, she discovered she’d had Frankie wrong all along....

Filled with extraordinary animals and the humans who dedicate their lives to saving them, An Elephant in My Kitchen by Françoise Malby-Anthony is a captivating and gripping listen.

exciting yet heartbreaking

Great storyline that weaves in and out of The Elephant Whisperer and the Last Rhino by her late husband.

gripping and exciting, yet saddening and heartbreakingly truthful.

I wish this book had 300 hours.

Amazing book with even more amazing story line. It made me fall in love with South Africa and its nature even more. I recommend to anyone who loves wildlife, who is interested in conservation and deeply cares about nature. However, this is also an extraordinary true story of a brave woman who thank to her not 'giving up' nature achieved so much good.

Narrator has done a grand job!

inspiring, often devastating and funny

I read this straight after reading the Elephant whisperer.
Not only was it as wonderful, brilliant and totally heart warming, it's such a brutally honest account from an extremely brave and passionate lady who suddenly found herself very much in hey own in Africa running a reservation and dream to care and save the elephants, rhinos anda al the wildlife on hey reserve.
You cry and laugh and want to hug this amazing lady by the end

Wonderful and moving account of a very brave woman

This book must spur us all on to doing more to play our part in conserving our natural and wild animal world, not just leave it to an very small number of incredibly brave people. The destruction of the elephant and rhino population in the last 200 years is criminal. A world without elephant herds and roaming rhinos is no world we want to leave to our children and grandchildren.
