Summary

A deeply moving story of what it means to care for those we love by best-selling author Kate Mosse, a celebration of older people and ageing, and of finding joy in the smallest acts of everyday caregiving.

As our population ages, more and more of us find ourselves caring for parents and loved ones - some 8.8 million people in the UK. An invisible army of carers holding families together.

Here, Kate Mosse tells her own personal story of finding herself a carer in middle age: first, helping her heroic mother care for her beloved father through Parkinson's, then supporting her mother in widowhood and finally as 'an extra pair of hands' for her 90-year-old mother-in-law.

This is a story about the gentle heroism of our carers, about small everyday acts of tenderness and finding joy in times of crisis. It's about juggling priorities, mind-numbing repetition, about guilt and powerlessness, about grief and the solace of nature when we're exhausted or at a loss. It is also about celebrating older people, about learning to live differently - and think differently about ageing.

But most of all, it's a story about love.

Dignified caring

I love the tone of this book. The author read it beautifully and her three important seniors are so warmly and touchingly described. Delightful relationships. It’s leaving a lasting impression.

Authentic love

Heartwarming & heartbreaking in equal measures. What a beautiful credit to her parents & her Mother-in-law, you can hear the love spoken in every line. You and so many who give ‘an extra pair of hands’ with such devotion, throughout all the difficult times and in such unprecedented times with covid too, are true angels on earth. Thank you for sharing your story Kate.

Wonderfully written and narrated

A lovely reminder of how precious family life is, and how important to enjoy every day with each other and to make time to let our family know how much we love them.

Wonderful narration, perfect in every way

An exquisite hymn of praise to an unselfish way of living that is ultimately far deeper and more enjoyable than you’d expect. A real encouragement to those of us who find ourselves caring for close friends and family. So much good sense and practical advice from a very special person with an agenda of appreciation, understanding and respect for others. The reader imbues each beautifully written, fluent and kind chapter with a true warmth.

Care and compassion

I loved this book about the role of the carer and how society views the elderly. Such a refreshing insight into daily life struggles and the hilarious escapades of Granny Rosie. Multi generational living is not easy, having a care responsibility is not for everyone but when it works well it is a blessing. My sister took on the role of carer for my mother and for this I shall be eternally grateful. It enabled Mum to live a long life surrounded by those who loved her, although alzheimer's robbed her of many memories and made some days and nights difficult.
The book was an easy listen and evoked many memories of my own family's struggles with the care system and how carers often have to do battle with bureaucracy.
