About this listen
A killer running rings around the police. A detective spiralling out of control.
DI Kate Young is on leave. She’s the force’s best detective, but her bosses know she’s under pressure, on medication and overcoming trauma. So after her bad judgement call leads to a narrowly averted public disaster, they’re sure all she needs is a rest.
But when Staffordshire Police summon her back to work on a murder case, it’s a harder, more suspicious Kate Young who returns. With a new ruthlessness, she sets about tracking down a clinical, calculating serial killer who is torturing victims and leaving clues to taunt the police. Spurred on by her reporter husband, Young begins to suspect that the murderer might be closer than she ever imagined.
As she works to uncover the truth, Young unravels a network of secrets and lies, with even those closest to her having something to hide. But with her own competence—and her grip on reality—called into question, can she unmask the killer before they strike again?

Narrator was extremely irritating !
Narrator was extremely irritating with her clipped tones and voice, however I kept going but wouldn’t chose another book with that narrator.

Very good
Very good although, slightly disappointed that I was able to figure out who the kill was so early on.

I really wanted to like this, but…
This has all the feel of a first novel to me, so I will try to be gentle. For a start, congrats to the author for completing it and getting it out there. That’s a big achievement in itself.
That said, I have to say that the book has some issues - I listened to it as an audiobook, and was frequently frustrated by mispronunciations, and some of the characterisation felt so badly off that it was hard to find the heroine sympathetic, or indeed anyone else in the book.
The story isn’t bad, although I guessed the killer fairy early on, but one thing that really lets it down is inappropriate vocabulary choices where it feels like the author has tried to find words that sound more intellectual, but which are used in such a way that they just grate. I wish the author had the confidence to just write in natural language, because it feels like this caused her to stumble and the book would have been better for it.
Overall, not a bad way to pass the time on a car journey, and hopefully there’ll be some improvement for the next in the series.

Who chose this narrator?
Currently on chapter 23 of 50-something and STILL can’t get over this narrator’s bizarre tone/rhythm/inflection! Funnily enough all the dialogue is fine, but when it’s just the text it’s distracting how the book is read. The narrator puts a weird emphasis on every second symbol like she’s reading a really long beat poem, and goes up at the end of every single sentence. It’s infuriating and distracting! Leaves you wondering who on Earth chose her for this book, not suited at all.
The story is good, a bit Val McDermid but the characters are definitely not as well developed as Val’s. I find the main character a bit annoying, a bit trope-y, but overall the story has been good enough to mean I’ll keep going despite the annoying narration!

An enjoyable listen
I enjoyed listening to this book & trying to work out who the murderer was (I worked it out about a chapter before Kate did) & why. I did get a bit fed up with the many flashbacks to the train incident, but by chapter 44 it all became clear why Kate was so disturbed about what happened.
I am now going to listen to this author’s second book in the series.
