About this listen
This inspirational New York Times best seller chronicles the lifelong friendship between a busy sales executive and a disadvantaged young boy and how both of their lives were changed by what began as one small gesture of kindness.
“A straightforward tale of kindness and paying it forward in 1980s New York...an uplifting reminder that small gestures matter.” (Kirkus Reviews)
Stopping was never part of the plan....
She was a successful ad sales rep in Manhattan. He was a homeless 11-year-old panhandler on the street. He asked for spare change; she kept walking. But then something stopped her in her tracks, and she went back. And she continued to go back, again and again. They met up nearly every week for years and built an unexpected, life-changing friendship that has today spanned almost three decades.
Whatever made me notice him on that street corner so many years ago is clearly something that cannot be extinguished, no matter how relentless the forces aligned against it. Some may call it spirit. Some may call it heart. It drew me to him, as if we were bound by some invisible, unbreakable thread. And whatever it is, it binds us still.

Lovely uplifting true story
Easy to listen to, meaningful and positive - nice feel good moments throughout. Also makes you grateful and thankful for your own life and understanding of the terrible challenges so many others face but how together you can learn and add value to one another despite those differences.

Loved it
Great narration. Brilliantly inspiring story. Well balanced view points. Food for thought as to how we can improve our kindness towards ourselves and others. It’s not a preaching story or a story of cringe, simply how two people’s lives intertwine to achieve a great outcome that enhances both their lives in different and similar ways. A glimpse into worlds some of us won’t know or have experienced, in the telling of the story it opens our eyes to becoming more tolerant of others.

Not a dry eye in the house
We listened to this while we made orders and I finished it in the night when I woke up. I cried so many tears for that beautiful boy & resonated with the troubled father figures. A story to ensure you appreciate the little things in life & practice gratefulness every day. You feel you are living in New York. A moving story of friendship & love.

One of the most inspirational books I've ever read
Would highly recommend this book. Its inspiring, honest and so well written. It makes you so thankful for having a home that most of us take for granted and how you may think a small act of kindness or reaching out doesn't make much difference but how it can change lives forever.

Nice story
Can’t help but feel it was a bit “white privilege” perspective. Still, it was well written and ‘nice’.
