About this listen
In our modern world of social media and relentless technological advancement, we are more connected than ever before. Though the scale of this connectivity is new, the instinctive desire to gather with our own kind has ancient roots. We can see the origins of our own societies in the social behaviour of the animals that share the planet with us. What’s more, human characteristics such as altruism, empathy, leadership and language can also be witnessed among animal groups.
Join Biologist Ashley Ward as he takes listeners into the intimate worlds of social animals. Journeying from Aysgarth Falls to the Great Barrier Reef, it becomes clear that animals are not so far removed from us as we might imagine. In a time where humans are struggling to navigate cityscapes, isolation and a loneliness epidemic, Ward shows us that studying the social behaviour of animals offers insights valuable in their own right as well as a window into the evolutionary basis of our own species.

Better than expected
Wonderful book! Found the insect section incredible. Funny down to earth narrator. Highly recommend. The only negative point is the unnecessary transitional music that was played at the end of chapters. As I listen at night in bed i round the screaming chimpanzees ALOT at 11pm! Would be better without

Read it twice in a row - wanted to fully appreciate it
The narrator did not grab me first off but I absolutely loved this. It is fascinating and so accessible to non-experts. Can’t recommend this highly enough.

in the end, we're all animals
A really fascinating insight into various animal behaviours, as they relate to the advantages and disadvantages of society, that only serves to reinforce our similarities to our animal cousins and our own place within the animal kingdom.

Amazing compilation of animal behaviour stories
This book only gets better as you listen until you really don't want it to end. It describes animal behaviour and progresses up to primates. I didn't want it to end and I only wish it had more references to its sources so I could read more.

Riveting
An unexpectedly engrossing listen. Fascinating and for the layman comprehensible. One of the best readings I’ve yet experienced.
