About this listen

It’s Downton Abbey with magic, in Bath’s secret mirror city

Cathy has been forced into an arranged marriage with William Iris - a situation that comes with far more strings than even she could have anticipated, especially when she learns of his family’s intentions for them both.

Meanwhile, Max and the gargoyle investigate the Agency - a mysterious organization that appears to play by its own twisted rules, none of them favourable to Society.

And in Mundanus, Sam has discovered something very peculiar about his wife’s employer - something that could herald disaster for everyone on both sides of the Split Worlds.

Learn when it is time for lemon drizzle cake

Sometimes you start reading about a fantasy world and it sticks with you for precisely the length of the book, sometimes it does not last even that long. The split worlds will stay with you until long after you put it down. If the first book (Between Two Thorns, Seriously, Read It) was an introduction to the world then this book is the main course. So many carefully worn threads from book 1 are explored but it remains true to the extant characters. You will find yourself laughing, crying, feeling deeply uncomfortable even at times, but always you feel for the people. The chapters between Cathy and William are without a doubt some of the most hair raising moments of the year for me and I watch Game of Thrones! I had palpable tears and roared in raucous laughter and all I can hope is that this is book 2 of so many more than just 3.

More fairies in London

I'm warming to Cathy as a heroine - she started off a bit wet but is beginning to show signs of character. This is very much a middle volume as it doesn't really come to a satisfactory conclusion in the same way that Between Two Thorns does. You definitely need to read that one first and now I can't wait for the concluding part of the story.

I've upped my rating of Emma Newman's narration from the first volume as I've come to really like her reading :)
