Summary

The long-awaited, enormously entertaining memoir by one of the great artists of our time.

In this candid and often hilarious memoir, the celebrated director, comedian, writer, and actor offers a comprehensive, personal look at his tumultuous life. Beginning with his Brooklyn childhood and his stint as a writer for the Sid Caesar variety show in the early days of television, working alongside comedy greats, Allen tells of his difficult early days doing standup before he achieved recognition and success. With his unique storytelling pizzazz, he recounts his departure into moviemaking, with such slapstick comedies as Take the Money and Run, and revisits his entire 60-year-long and enormously productive career as a writer and director, from his classics Annie Hall, Manhattan, and Hannah and Her Sisters to his most recent films, including Midnight in Paris. Along the way, he discusses his marriages, his romances, and his famous friendships, his jazz playing, and his books and plays. We learn about his demons, his mistakes, his successes, and those he loved, worked with, and learned from in equal measure.

This is a hugely entertaining, deeply honest, rich and brilliant self-portrait of a celebrated artist who is ranked among the greatest filmmakers of our time.

Very good read

I have been a fan of Woody Allen since my adolescence and chose to research parody and his literary pieces as a university student in Italy. So many years later it was pleasure to be reminded of his sources, of comedians and films very difficult to access in a different language in a pre-YouTube culture. What shines through the book is Allen‘s enviable attitude to creativity, his disinterest in fame and glory, as well as his basic decency. A large part of the book is obviously devoted to justify himself against Mia Farrow’s accusations, pretty successfully, in my opinion.

Gripping from start to finish

very enjoyable book, excellently narrated by Woody. I loved all the detail from his younger days as a kid and youngster making his way in the big smoke.
the family debacle and tragedy was painful but gave me a much more balanced view than I had to date.
the intimate details of the films, the movie stars and the back stories was fascinating
the Roman Polanski story was hilarious.
all good, very enjoyable.

The Ultimate AutoBio

This is the best Audible I have ever listened to. Charming, insightful, and a piece of work to go alongside all his best. Woody glides the listener through his life with ease, even through the rough times. Let the doubters doubt but the tough times he had is dealt with through intelligence and respect. This is worthy of many awards. Totally wonderful.

Brilliant. A truly original comedian and writer.

Woody Allen has lived an incredible life. I’m usually bored after the first few chapters of a biography, never mind an auto’. But this was more incredible than a film: the people he’s known, his hard work and talent... it can get a little sugary when he’s pouring on the superlatives discussing yet another star’s talent, but that’s almost inevitable when you’ve worked with the people he has.
And as you’d expect if you’re reading this, it’s very funny in places, and never less than amusing.
His psychological resilience, given what I believe is a witch-hunt initiated by Mia Farrow, is nothing short of superhuman. And for anyone reading this who thinks he’s guilty, just ask yourself two questions: What makes you so sure about Farrow? And what if he is innocent? Think of the hell he’s endured. He’s never been charged, let alone convicted.
He’s not a perfect human being, but he’s not the monster he’s often made out to be.
He’s simply one of the all-time great writers and comedians. And, at his best, a wonderful director.
So I’ve taken a side. Your turn.

Superb, convincing, laugh out loud

Hilarious, brilliantly read. Especially enjoyed the descriptions of his early years in mid-century New York.

One of my top favourite books. I cried at the end.

It's a great book. Inspirational. I am now listening to it for the third time. I can't leave it. I felt as though I'd reached the end of a companionship when I finished it. Of all the books I have listened to since becoming a member of Audible many years ago I would put this at the top. When I said I was reading this book some people had an intake of breath. Amazing how people with little or no knowledge are quick to judge. I was enlightened by the truth evident from the legal facts of the situation but the lynch mob mentality of the media, the public and indeed some actors is very depressing. Mia Farrow's accusation was proven to be false and yet nobody who took her side seemed to put her children first. Of all the facts the one that sticks most is that Soon Li and Woody were investigated not just for the original case but also investigated by two separate judges before they could adopt their two girls. The success of the adoption alone is proof that the accusations were false. The book is inspirational. Not only by how Woody Allen deals with the false accusation but his absolute focus on what he wanted to achieve and how simple he has kept his life. I envy him more than any other person for his directness, his focus, his wonderful humour and the kindness and generosity of his character.

Funny, touching, wise.

Come to defy the guilt by accusation zealots, stay to enjoy the best comic writer of his generation e.g. "it was the worst day of my life, and it was still early."

Masterpiece

Forget what you think you know. Put your bullshit prejudice aside. This is Allen's greatest work on or off the screen.

A fascinating account

Director, comedian, writer, and actor Woody Allen relates how a love of movies during his childhood in Brooklyn eventually took him down the path to making movies of his own. From his early work as a writer and stand-up comic, Allen talks about his career, his friends and his relationships.

There didn’t seem any point in sitting down to read this book when I had the opportunity to hear the author narrate it himself. I’ve always loved Woody’s voice, his humour, his take on the world and his writing style. This book gives a solid account of how he created his many success, as well as the failures. Throughout the book, his self-deprecatory style is endearing and gives credence to his career and relationship decisions, even when everything seemed to be going against him. Known as someone who rarely watches his own movies, Woody’s recall of how each one came into being is absolutely fascinating, and it’s interesting to learn of his directing technique and how he deals with good and not so good collaborators.

I didn’t buy this audiobook to hear about the whole Mia Farrow allegations, but it’s reasonable that Woody might want to relate his side of the story. For anyone who thinks there’s no smoke without fire, it’s quite clear that Woody’s account is backed up by many others, including Farrow’s own children, Farrow’s previous employees and Woody’s (now) wife of twenty-odd years, Soon-Yi, and her treatment at the hands of her adoptive mother.

A fascinating account told in his own inimitable way.
