Summary
Quando si parla di Stato laico si allude, in termini generali, al mantenimento della distinzione tra sfera civile e sfera religiosa. Una distinzione conquistata a fatica, ma che oggi può considerarsi un dato acquisito nei paesi "occidentali".
La storia ci dice tuttavia che esistono vari modi di intendere il rapporto tra Stato e fenomeno religioso, che risentono delle tradizioni politico-culturali dei singoli paesi. In questo quadro, l'esperienza italiana presenta tratti assolutamente peculiari. Il cammino percorso dall'Unità a oggi ha avuto un andamento tutt'altro che rettilineo: dall'indirizzo fortemente laico del periodo liberale alla svolta confessionista del fascismo, al tentativo attuale - frenato, tra l'altro, dalla presenza della sede storica della Chiesa cattolica - di arrivare a un'effettiva applicazione dell'articolo 8 della Costituzione.
