Summary

Salvation Has a Price.

An enthralling murder mystery with a vividly realised future world, forcing listeners to grapple hard hitting questions about the climate crisis, our relationship with Artificial Intelligence and the price we would be willing to pay, as a species, to be saved. Perfect for fans of Blake Crouch, Neal Stephenson, Philip K Dick, Kim Stanley Robinson and RR Haywood, or those that loved Steven Pacey's narration of Joe Abercrombie's First Law series.

It's 2050, a decade after a heatwave that killed 400 million across the Persian Gulf, including journalist Marcus Tully's wife. Now he must uncover the truth: Was the disaster natural? Or is the weather now a weapon of genocide?

A whistleblower pulls Tully into a murder investigation at the centre of an election battle for a global dictator, with a mandate to prevent a climate apocalypse. A former US President campaigns against the first AI politician of the position, but someone is trying to sway the outcome.

Tully must convince the world to face the truth and make hard choices about the future of the species. But will humanity ultimately choose salvation over freedom, whatever the cost?

Excellent debut and outstanding narration

highly realistic and believable dystopian future techno-thriller. Steven Pacey does as always, an outstanding job of voicing the myriad of characters..

Once started I just kept listening

An interesting listen that covered the nature or truth, the potential of AI and human nature. A very entertaining listen once it got going not heavy or boring given the subject matter.

I really enjoyed the twists in the story and found the characters worth investing in.

The narrator was outstanding as usual he has a great voice and nice range for lots of different characters. Steven Pacey is a master of his craft.

The pace of the book is perfect in my opinion.

I was very unsure if I would like this audiobook but tried it due to the narrator but I really did as it was more a murder mystery with intrigue rather than just a book about AI or the environment.

Engaging story - brilliantly read

Loved the crime-solving using imagined nee technologies thought was really clever. Great characters and as ever, anything Stephen Pacey reads is just a joy to listen to. I found this book via a Reddit thread of Pacey fans and saw the authors message about him writing this story and getting Stephen as the narrator. Wow! It really is a standout debut novel. But I felt the ending was a bit abrupt…. Or…. Thomas please write us a follow-up!

Ok techno/sci-fi murder thriller

A really good concept to have a futuristic murder mystery, set against a backdrop of the climate crisis. Unfortunately I am not sure I fully understood the final twist. While it was listenable enough, it doesn't have the brilliant novelty or insight of Neal Stephenson and other masters of the genre. Just ok.

Kept me on my toes

Very good debut novel, I'll be waiting for the next. The writer allows you to predict some things, just to feel good about your wits, then surprises you with others to keep you interested. Masterfully done. The narration is brilliant as you expect from Mr Pacey.

Marvellous twists

Great story. Magnificently performed by Steven Pacey. I loved the depth and red herrings that the plot took me down.
