Summary

Shapeshifters exist. Monsters are real. And no good deed goes unpunished.

Nursing student Ellie St. James didn’t mean to get involved in a war between rival gangs of shifters, but saving the life of a local mob boss’s child has dragged her into one. When Ellie’s life is threatened because of her involvement, she’s forced to go on the run, protected by Carter Ballis, head of security for the mobster’s family, and a lethal shifter himself.

Blood, fire, and warfare weren’t part of Ellie’s plans, but even if she survives, her life will never be the same. The world is more than she knew, and she’s seen too much. People capable of morphing into deadly creatures from legends and folklore around the globe are coming for her. The cost of staying alive means trusting Carter to defend her, and he’s every bit as frightening as the creatures that want her dead....

Great story

A well narrated story with a variety of accents used.
The story is really interesting and the narrator did a good job of differentiating between characters.

Interesting and worth reading

I haven't read many Shifter books before but I do know they usually fall into certain obvious categories (werewolf, vampire etc). It is refreshing that this book doesn't focus on specific shifters, and it's great that you never know what type of species will come out of the woodwork.

Ellie the "Innocent" finds herself in an impossible situation which is out of her control and puts her in danger, and Carter the "Protector" is also put in a difficult position where he has to think on his feet and act fast. However, Ellie is not so sweet and innocent as you might think, and sometimes comes across as very annoying and unable to see the bigger picture. In particular one of her actions in self defence is very questionable (to say the least) especially considering how timid she comes across. In the scheme of things it didn't make sense, but I just ended up parking that to one side and got on with the rest of the story, as I'm sure that aspect of Ellie plays out in a later book. Carter hates humans, is brash and constantly spits out nasty comments aimed at Ellie...but yet has good overall intentions. It's an unusual mix of personalities, where the author plays Devils advocate all the way through, challenging you to see both sides of each coin and each character. It's an interesting book that doesn't play to the usual obvious nuances that other books do in this category which is great. I enjoyed the narration but sometimes the Irish accent went a bit wonky.

I was given this book for free of my own choosing and voluntarily left this review.

Interesting start of a series

Book received for free in exchange for honest review

This was a different style than my normal books, but seemed an interesting enough idea to be worth a shot. The shifters used are not the standard (I don't think there was even one werewolf character in this book), which is a good change, making the setting have a level of interest there so nice bit of world building. Story starts in media res done well, and has interesting twists and turns, building up to a cliffhanger that means I'll have to look for the 2nd book.

Not for me

Audio ARC

Though it seems to be written well, I could not connect to the story and didn't click with the narration, so I discontinued reading.

Let this story burn your heart

Book 1 in the series. First story I listened to by the author Sarah Ashwood and the narrator Melissa Kay Benson.
Heroine is Ellie. Hero is Carter Story takes place in Fort Worth Texas

Love how the author took different shifters granted most are from Greek Mythological , like Carter and many more .
Ellie was at the wrong place at the wrong time , she only was trying to save a little boy from being hit by a car Little does she know what that one action will propel her into.
Carter is the security man for the mob boss , the parent for the little boy . I like how once Ellie gets a glimpse of different shifters , a bull , a Griffin and Carter who is a Talon . Ellie can’t believe that shifters exist
Things really get interesting with Carter and Ellie move around.
What I like about this series is there are different POV , Ellie , Carter and 2 policemen
The thing that got irritated me was Ellie being whinny , and Carter calling her kid once to many times .

The performance of Melissa Kay Benson was good. Her voice is smooth and clear. She did the characters with her tone good

brilliant bronze and beauty

Loved the fast pace of this book. And rapid twists and turns and Im glad to hear there are further books.
Ellie and Carter are hot stuff waiting too happen and the oblivon of key charecters to a shifter world believable and then their shock in finding it.
Highly recommended.

Good story

I loved the storyline and the characters were great . My only issue was Ellie was to whiny I know she was put in a difficult situation but whining about it and getting at Carter wasn’t going to solve anything. I was glad she mellowed out near the end. I haven’t listened to Mellissa Kay Bensons narration before and I enjoyed listening to her.
