About this listen

Master Hugh, Kate, and their children attend the Midsummer’s Eve fire. Early next morning, Hugh hears the passing bell ring from the Church of St. Beornwald and moments later is summoned. Tenants collecting the ashes to spread upon their fields have found burned bones.

Master Hugh learns of several men of Bampton and nearby villages who have gone missing recently. Most are soon found, some alive, some dead. Master Hugh eventually learns that the bones are those of a bailiff from a nearby manor. Someone has slain him and placed his body in the fire to destroy evidence of murder. Bailiffs are not popular men; they dictate labor service, collect rents, and enforce other obligations. Has this bailiff died at the hand of some angry tenant? Hugh soon discovers this is not the case. There is quite another reason for murder....

Great history

It may not be pure history - however, this story gives an insight into so many aspects of possible lives in the past. The feudal system, the horses, the sheep, the dovecote and birds, the foods and cloths and clothing, the woodlands and farmlands. I appreciate how many aspects have changed in some ways; whether it’s better these days I know I cannot say. Just brilliant narrations and story telling. Thanks

I have warmed to the new narrator

Like many others, I was sorry that Steven Crossley stopped being the narrator after the first few books. He made me an addict!
But actually, I do think the other stories are beautifully read by Tim Bruce. Different and perhaps not quite as lovable, but well done and with good variation for the different people’s voices.
This book’s plot rambles along a bit…but the plots are not as important as the characters, the dialogue, and the style. I love the Bampton and environs setting, especially since I come from those parts.
Great thanks to Mel Starr and both readers for these stories.

Better than the previous book

I still find the narrator grating but this plot is more interesting than that of the previous book. It’s an easy listen, quite good for a free download.

Ashes to Ashes

Great story. Once I got over the initial shock in the change of narrator I settled down and enjoyed it just the same

Improving

As the series goes on the writer seems to write more confidently and the storylines gradually improve.

Great series

I'm doing a review for the whole series as I've left it so long since I started listening to them.

I would highly recommend this series and in fact I have done so to a number of people already. Very impressed with the writing, the research that seems to have been done and the historical accuracy is excellent.

Nice characters, good pace, interesting stories. Really interesting to see the ability of surgeons then and the ways Hugh deducts things.

👌 Another masterpiece from Mel Starr

Another great story featuring Hugh Singleton, Surgeon/bailiff, rich in detail without being overly wordy. Thought the narration was excellent and very well suited to this book

Another good story

Another enjoyable investigation by Hugh de Singleton. As always, the author draws you into the Medieval world. It has a rather complex ending and the narrator could do with distinguishing between the characters' voices more to make it easier to follow, but I enjoyed it all tha same.
