Summary

Dear Listener,

When I found myself experiencing a motherhood that I never expected, one that I was terrified of living, I didn't know how I would carry on being 'normal'. I didn't know how much I would long for people to say my son Teddy's name, to not treat him like he didn't exist. Maybe you're in this boat too, or maybe you want to support someone who is? Whatever your reason, I hope our story goes a little way to help.

Love, Elle

What do you do when the unthinkable happens? Elle Wright had an admittedly easy pregnancy - her scans went well, she and her baby were healthy throughout, and in May 2016, she and her husband welcomed their son, Teddy, into the world. Just a few hours after giving birth, they woke to find a nurse holding a cold and unresponsive Teddy, who had stopped breathing during the night. The happiest day of Elle's life had turned into every parent's worst nightmare, and she had to let her beautiful baby boy go. Three days after delivering him into the world, Elle sat with Teddy in her arms as he took his last breaths, and tucked him in for the final time. Ask Me His Name is a moving account of Elle's pregnancy, Teddy's life, and what happens when a mother leaves a hospital with empty arms. In the UK, one in four pregnancies ends in premature death, but conversations about the heartbreakingly frequent issue of baby loss are few and far between. In this honest, beautifully written and hopeful exploration of a different kind of mothering, Elle explores how she navigated a parenthood that no one had prepared her for.

The most beautiful book.

How on earth Elle read this I’ll never know.

Be prepared to not be able to put this down after starting it. Without a doubt the most heart breaking, traumatic book I’ve ever read. But I felt it was important to read. I’ve followed Elle’s story for the last few years after hearing her interview on Loose Women with Marina Fogle during baby loss awareness month. How do you say the right thing? How do you help? If you’ve wondered these questions, you have to read this book. Elle explains so brilliantly what to say in these situations & it’s so helpful to know what not to say. I think one’s like Elle & Nico are the bravest people, how they cope I do not know.

A must read - very thought provoking

Elle and Nico’s story of losing Teddy at such a young age is raw, inspiring and thought provoking. It has certainly helped me feel more equipped to know how to behave if someone I know goes through similar, although I really hope I never need to of course. As someone who is about to embark on IVF, it’s also taught me the very important lesson that nothing is guaranteed. Thank you Elle for sharing Teddy with us all x

Heartbreaking and honest to the last

loved this book, even though I wish no one had to go through what they did, it's a heartfelt account that's helped me to help a friend of mine grieving her child. Thank you Elle and Teddy too

Amazing

Insightful, amazing, emotional and filled me with hope and love. As friend to a mother who lost her child at 10 days old, this book is what we got her for her first Mother’s Day. After her reading and loving it she said it would be beneficial for us, as her friends to read, so I downloaded the audio book.

It showed me an insight into what my friend may feel but can’t say, it’s helped me with how to communicate openly with her and it’s given me hope for her, our future.

Great read, just make sure you have the tissues at the ready. Being the friend of the mother, teddy’s aunties paragraph touched me a lot. I think these where a great addition to the book and made it for mother’s and the supporters alike.

It brought a whole new level of emotion when I also realise Elle narrated the book herself. Well done on an amazing book/ audiobook.

Inspiring!!

What an amazing tribute to Elle’s precious little boy Teddy. This books gives those who haven’t been through the traumatic experience of the loss of a child an insight into how it must feel as parent and has taught me how to communicate and support others. But also this book would provide huge support for those who have lost a child. Hearing Elle narrate the book adds extra emotion, so grateful to her for sharing her experiences. Would highly recommend Ask Me His Name.

Beautifully written!

As a student Midwife I always try to read books relating to birth and a peer recommended this book to me, I knew it would be difficult to listen to and process but I gave it a go anyways. The story was a complete eye opener to me and I felt completely emerged into every chapter. I felt that the story was told from such a unique position and I am ever grateful that the author was able to share with us and help others going through a similar experience.

Such a heartbreaking, powerful life story

This book shares the need for people to talk about our children. Such a shame this family had to go through losing their little Teddy. Thank you for your honesty. It became a little therapy for me as I listened to your calming voice.

Beautifully written so powerful

Teddy will be so very proud of you x
I really believe you have changed the way we talk about babyloss and hopefully people will be more open about this subject and we can all say our babies who have died names withou the awkward silence and strange responses. Thank you x

Brave story

I really enjoyed listening to this book. Although so very sad it was well written and I enjoyed listening to Elle. I think the book would really help someone who knows someone who too had been though the death of a loved one so young. I agree too that it is so important to talk about this. In this book Teddy and his legacy will live on.
