A Blood Angels story
In the aftermath of the Devastation of Baal, the call of the Black Rage draws Astorath, Redeemer of the Lost, to the planet Dulcis. There he finds a successor Chapter on the brink of destruction and a revelation that will shake all the sons of Sanguinius to their core.

The story: following the Devastation of Baal and the arrival of the Primarch Roboute Guilliman’s Indomitus Crusade, Commander Dante of the Blood Angels has been appointed Lord Regent of all Imperium Nihilus. Working with the successor chapters of the Blood Angels, Dante commands that the area around the Red Scar be scouted in preparation for reconquest. The Red Wings’ sweep has led them to the foetid world of Dulcis, dangerously near to the Cicatrix Maledictum itself. Decimated by the tyranids during the war for Baal and only lightly reinforced by Primaris Space Marines, the Red Wings Chapter are in no position to deal with the events that unfold there. Strange psychic phenomenon and a deadly xenos enemy threaten the great hope of all the Chapters of the Blood - that the flaw in Sanguinius’ geneseed has at last been tamed. Drawn by the Black Rage to Dulcis, Astorath the Grim, Lord High Chaplain and Redeemer of the Lost, comes to aid the Red Wings. But what he discovers there will shake the Chapters of the Blood to their very core.

Red Wings not Astorath
I write this at the halfway point and there has been next to nothing on Astorath at all. A brief cameo appearance at the start and that was it. I am guessing there will be slightly more of him near the end.
Also a lot of moaning cry baby Primaris marines who think they know better than the Firstborn and Dante. Moaning about having to help guard Imperial worlds. Almost makes it sound like an opening for some to turn traitor..................
The only good thing is learning a little more about the Red Wings but even that is thin on the ground.

Enjoyable medium action 40k story
Very cool story, if you like me enjoy it when they explore enemies of the Imperium that isn't straight from the tabletop and also that little existential bit about the Space Marines genetic flaws.

Ok
Yea, this wasn’t exactly a masterpiece. It certainly doesn’t compare to some of Haley’s other blood angels works but it is still quite good, and the enemies were unique and refreshing. In fact they are probably the most interesting part of the book, which is a problem seeing as it is supposed to be about Astorath. He is cool in it though, Haley can and has written him well.

a short but still very enjoyable story
as always Guy Haley brings home the great grim dark . poor astorath quite possibly the worst job in the chapter.

The majority of this tale doesn’t feature him at all and when it does it’s not very satisfying, for me the only reason I finished it was Richard Reeds narration

So disappointing
I have to say I am a dedicated Blood Angels fan and feel there lore is the best out there as far a space marine chapters are concerned. For me Dante, Mephiston and Astorath make up the triad that embodies the blood angels and as far as the first two are concerned this has been achieved many time over in there rich lore.
This book however was nothing of the sort it was stagnant giving us no background on him what so ever, bearly even mentioning him untill the end, he is said to be one of if not the most ferocious fighter withing the blood angels chapter and was made to look weak against the "primaris" all in all a very disappointing story and I pray the next one "if there is one" will give him the credit he deserves so unhappy with this book and was so excited for its release.
Such a disappointment. 😞

Somehow, boring.
Not sure how you can make a story about a bunch of vampiric 7foot tall gene-enhanced super soldiers struggling to understand their millennia long curse while fighting inhuman aliens who live in a hell-dimension and turn people into their puppets and yet here we are.
Just another novel with a named character from Warhammer where nothing interesting happens and there is no real insight or development of that character, becoming a real pattern now.
