Summary
Axel Belmont, though a wealthy and much-respected botanist, occasionally takes a turn serving as magistrate in his rural corner of Oxfordshire. When the owner of a neighboring estate is the victim of a homicide, Axel initially suspects the man's much younger wife, Abigail Stoneleigh, of committing the crime.
But then Abby appears to be in harm's way, and Axel's investigation uncovers longstanding deceptions aimed at cheating her out of wealth and happiness. The solution to this deadly puzzle remains elusive, even as Axel captures Abby's heart and surrenders his own. Axel is a fine investigator, a devoted father, a brilliant scientist, (and an excellent kisser), but will he solve the mystery before the villain strikes again?

Hypocritical Hero
The heroine was conned into marriage at an early age to a man over 30 years her senior. He controls her and denies her the chance of motherhood, by enforcing a "white wedding".
Then along comes the Hero, while investigating her husband death, (ie vulnerable widow), he seduces her. Knowing she is needy, he has no future to offer her, he takes her virginity and harps on about how he can't take advantage of her. All the time comparing their relationship with that of his dead wife. She wil settle for anything and is a willing doormat, accepting all his dictates
The secondary characters make up for this hypocrisy, and the murder mystery makes a good story. She should have gone to London with Nicholas rather than stay with a man who has double standards.
