About this listen

Kate, a journalist in a small northern town, is fed up with covering black-pudding championships for the Slackmucklethwaite Mercury and living with Mum, Dad, and Gran in a semi called Wits End. When evil tycoon Peter Hardstone takes over the paper, slashes budgets, and sacks staff, Kate's career hits an all-time low. However, gloom turns to glamour once Hardstone's sexy son arrives to work on the Mercury. And when Kate's sent with him to cover the glittering Cannes Film Festival, she can't believe her luck. But it's not all fun and games!©2003 Wendy Holden (P)2014 Audible, Inc. Literature & Fiction Comedy

Funny, yet a little obvious

If you liked Bridget Jones, you like this. Similar, funny off beat style, yet the characters and plots are a little obvious. Great accents by the narrator.

Suspend belief and enjoy the froth

Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed this, despite a heroine whose life ambition seems to be to make two short planks look intelligent. Kate's actually got a lot of character and personality but still falls for an obvious young con man, jumps to (wrong) conclusions about practically everyone she meets, and can't recognise anything that's sitting right under her nose.

It's still good fun, this story of a Yorkshire small town journalist transported with no contacts to the Côte d'Azur who survives amid one of Wendy Holden's gloriously eccentric casts. My favourite character has to be Kate's grandmother, followed by the two former Times journalists yearning for their former glory. Even the notorious Champagne d'Vyne of several previous Holden books makes a guest appearance.

Helen Lederer does some great voices, and makes the improbable story good relaxing listening.

Totally dissapointing from Wendy Holden

I adore Wendy Holdens' books, they are brilliant, but not this one. The story is making no sense, my mind is wandering as I have tried to listen. I find the reader, Helen is not good either. Afraid I am asking for this book to be credited back to my account. Was so looking forward to it too.
