From tech executive to an entrepreneur: My transformational journey!

  • Summary

  • My journey has been a roller-coaster.

I was introverted and loner growing up. I left home at 11 because there was no school beyond 5th grade, where my father worked. That was the start of my life of struggles, that made me determined early on.

My first exposure to entrepreneurship came when I was in high school. During my visits, I manned the cash box. I was overjoyed by customers coming to me and paying, admiring me like a business owner. They discussed their problems with me well beyond wheat and flour. They asked how to get their children into good schools or get better in maths. I loved my role as a child entrepreneur.

I was burned early on in my career in India. The first startup failed. The multinational I joined later sent me on foreign assignments so often. The worst was when I had to leave behind my newborn baby, my 12-day-old daughter. I made a promise to myself to make a change. I took up university courses, high-visibility projects, and mentors.

When I moved to the US, I thought my life had transformed, but I faced a new array of challenges related to Workplace visibility, financial insecurity, and cultural differences. I felt like I was thrown into a Diverse Culture hot pot, and I worked hard to overcome them.

I needed to move up the management ladder and enhance my management skills to succeed. I did my MBA from Berekely, but my social life turned into a mess.

Then COVID hit. Something unexpected happened. After 30 years of corporate rut, I was laid off. I almost lost my house—I had to sell it to move to a cheaper area. My daughter got married during those difficult times, and I had to cut down on her wedding expenses, something my wife won’t forgive me for.

That led me to jump into something I had tasted as a child and longed for over the years: beginning my Entrepreneurial journey. I formed my LLC. I learned, learned, and learned; I learned business success habits. I developed expertise in leadership development, marketing and sales automation, and product delivery.

3 things are core to my value system: Family, Health, and Financial independence. I couldn’t be happier in my life on all 3 of them.

In summary, I was stuck in the low points several times and faced challenges at multiple points. However, I learned lessons and made key changes throughout my life to leap forward.

The core lessons that I learned that make my life better with higher income and influence:

    ● No one is born with business skills.

    ● The growth mindset is the key. You must continuously learn, be proactive, adapt, and leave your comfort zone.

    ● Use the right systems and people. Even if you work hard, you may fail if you don’t have the right systems or people.

    That's why I do what I do.

As a business growth expert, I consult on setting up the right business strategy and system. In the next episode I will outline a 5 step blueprint to succeed as a small business.
