Summary

In a Tennessee small town in the 1960s, one woman finds the courage to stand up for her life with a little help from the bees.

Rennie King's life isn't at all what she expected when she married the hotshot baseball player from her small town of Spark, Tennessee. Reeling from the loss of her most recent pregnancy, she desperately needs the support of her husband, but instead of comfort, she finds he is increasingly angry and often turns that anger on her.

When a bee lands on her arm one day, Rennie knows she needs to go check on her beloved uncle. How she knows, well, she doesn't really want to explore that just yet. Sure enough, when she arrives, she finds him collapsed on the ground. As the summer progresses, she finds the bees appearing and pointing her in directions that help her break free from the husband who is becoming increasingly desperate and violent.

With a little help from her family, her friends at the local diner where she works, and of course, the bees, Rennie begins to hope that there are options for women beyond the home, even in the 1960s. But breaking free is hard, and as the heat rises that summer, so do tempers until everything comes to a head one hot, humid night.

Hope-filled and infused with the magic of bees, Bees in June captures the turbulent 1960s as Rennie discovers a life much broader than she'd ever imagined.
