Summary
Some legends can kill you.
When a young woman is brutally murdered in the Norfolk countryside, the locals blame Black Shuck - a legendary wild dog.
There’s only one problem: The wounds weren’t made by an animal.
DCI Robert Kett is battling a black dog of his own. With his wife still missing, and the injuries from his last case leaving him in constant pain, everything seems impossible - not least looking after his three young children.
But when a second body appears, even bloodier than the last, Kett finds himself on a hunt for one of the most ruthless serial killers the country has ever seen.
A killer who may be hunting him, too.
Full of death and dark humour, you won't be able to put down this fast-paced British crime thriller from million-selling author Alex Smith. Perfect for fans of JD Kirk, LJ Ross, Val McDermid, and Ian Rankin.
Binge the series now:
PAPER GIRLS
BAD DOG
THREE LITTLE PIGS
WHIP CRACK
RUN RABBIT RUN
STONE COLD DEAD (coming soon)
Alex Smith wrote his first book when he was six. It wasn’t particularly good, but it did have some supernatural monsters in it. His DCI Robert Kett thrillers have monsters in too, although these monsters are very human, and all the more terrifying for it. In between, he has published 12 novels for children and teenagers under his full name, Alexander Gordon Smith - including the award-winning Escape from Furnace series, which is loved by millions of readers worldwide and which is soon to become a motion picture. He lives in Norwich with his wife and three young daughters.

Just fantastic
I loved the first ook in this series (Paper Girls) and the second in the series is just as good. This story is the second I have read/listened to in recent months featuring Black Shuck (the first was Ellie Griffiths The Night Hawks), a ghostly b;ack dog, often an omen of death. The plot of this book is quite unique and wasn't what I had imagined. It is much, much darker and such a great read.
I love DCI Robbie Kett. He's a fantastic character, and the books are as much about him and his lovely family as about the brilliant stories. His struggle as a single father of 3 young girls is sometimes heart-rending but often so funny that they make me giggle to myself. I also love Kett's boss, Colin Clare.
The narration by Tim Bruce is great. Unfortunately, at the time of writing this review the rest of the series is not available on Audible :-( If you read this Alex Smith, please consider bringing the rest of the series to Audible!

As good as book 1
It's not very often that I find a series of books that keeps me listening and wanting more.
I have already downloaded book 3.
The only question I have is why does Kett keep running into buildings when he knows it will put his life in danger?
I love his 3 children. Their little outburst feel very natural.
Well I can't wait to start the next audio in this series.

Disappointing
The obnoxious children are a real distraction, seeming to take up a lot of the story. I don’t think I will be reading any more of this series.

Well Really???
Enjoyable listening, as was the first book but I found the storyline a little ridiculous to say the least. The main character is superhuman although likeable. This was just very far fetched. Never the less I liked it enough to crack on with the third in the series.

Addictive read
This is the second in a series involving DCI Robbie Kett who has moved to Norfolk with his children on compassionate leave after the trauma of his wife's abduction.
The author has established an addictive storyline which delves into the darkest places of the human psyche which contrasts with his relationships with his three daughters creating the light and dark of his world.
Suffice to say he is dragged into working with Norfolk CID more or less straight away in the first of the series. So far I am about to listen to the third in this series of eight and I would love to be able to download all the books but can't find the rest on Audible.
I feel I shall have to buy the paperbacks..

Loved it
I absolutely loved this one! At some points I couldn't even breathe. I usually listen to my audio books while I work but it was impossible with this one especially towards the end. I couldn't concentrate on anything else. I just sat there mouth gaping, heart thundering listening to the events unfold. Some moments had me close to tears as I am a dog person. The narrator did an amazing job. Already got book 3!

Gripping story, great characters and wonderful mellifluous narration by Tim Bruce, can’t wait to listen to the next story. I highly recommend.
