Summary

Baudolino, ein schlitzohriger Bauernbengel aus dem Piemont, biegt mit seinen dreisten Lügen den Lauf der Dinge um. Zum Beispiel im Jahr 1154, als der 13-jährige Baudolino dem großen Barbarossa einen Bären aufbindet. Fortan ist er als kaiserlicher Ziehsohn mit dabei, wenn Geschichte geschrieben wird: Und er lehrt uns die auch heute noch gültige Einsicht, dass Geschichtsschreibung in erster Linie die Fälschung von Geschichte ist. Warum wollte Barbarossa wirklich ins Heilige Land? Und war es tatsächlich ein Badeunfall, bei dem er unterwegs umkam? Wenn Baudolino die Gebeine der Heiligen Drei Könige für den Transport nach Köln aufmotzt, dem Kaiser die Heiligsprechung Karls des Großen vorschlägt, einen Brief des mythischen Priesterkönigs Johannes fingiert oder falsche Reliquien in Umlauf bringt, dann wird klar, dass die ausgefuchsten Medien- und Pressestrategien der Moderne ihren Ursprung im Mittelalter haben.
