Summary

Who could love a beast?

Plucked from her high society life, Beauty finds herself well-suited for the solitude of her new, humble home. However, when her father steals from an enchanted castle in her name, Beauty is left with a choice: Marry her self-absorbed suitor while her father wastes away in a dungeon, or take his place as the prisoner of a beast. She chooses Beast, hopeful that his keen, human eyes mean that he can be manipulated like any other man. She doesn’t realize that he means to keep her as a guest rather than a prisoner, and as her manners slip away the castle starts to feel like home.

But Beast’s curse is closing in, and everyone has an angle. Can Beauty find a way to keep her newfound happiness and freedom, or will time run out and destroy everything she loves?

Beauty and Beast is a cheeky stand-alone retelling of the classic fairytale.

An original retelling with great characterisation

Beauty and the Beast is absolutely my favourite fairy story, and although I expected this retelling to be familiar and predictable I felt it was worth revisiting as I love the story so much. I was enthralled from the first page, and it was certainly not predictable. Beauty's stay in Beast's enchanted castle was explored in far more depth than I have come across before, and I've read lots of versions of this story. I love the characterisation, the way the personalities of both Beauty and Beast were expanded and brought to life so that they became like real people, with real emotions and how somehow their flaws made them easy to relate to and more likeable. Beauty is quite vain, but who could blame her, when her name itself draws attention to her looks, and no-one seems to look beyond her appearance, but she is also feisty and courageous. Beast is somewhat uncouth, but as he has been given a beastly form, it is only natural that he should have forgotten his manners - but he is thoughtful and considerate as well as being a lover of books, like Beauty. I really enjoyed the banter between the two of them and how their relationship developed.

Beauty's family, especially her father, don't come across as so likeable and I could quite understand Beauty being happy to get away from them. The only thing stopping me from giving this a straight five star rating, was the twist ending. I'm sorry, but without wanting to give too much away, I was disappointed. It was certainly original, and logical to a point, but it wasn't what I'd been hoping for. Having said this, the story is extremely well written and kept me listening well into the night, and the narration was a pleasure to listen to.

Enchanting, magical and beautifully retold

I love the narrator's lilting voice and the beautiful descriptions in this re-imagined fairytale. The mystery, magic and wonder of my favourite childhood Disney film return with new depth, complexity and beauty.
