As I sleep, my mind will erase everything I did today. I will wake up tomorrow as I did this morning. Thinking I'm still a child. Thinking I have a whole lifetime of choice ahead of me ...'Memories define us. So what if you lost yours every time you went to sleep?

Your name, your identity, your past, even the people you love - all forgotten overnight.

And the one person you trust may only be telling you half the story. Welcome to Christine's life.

Critic reviews

“Quite simply the best debut novel I've ever read.” (Tess Gerritsen)
“Brilliant in its pacing, profound in its central question, suspenseful on every page - and satisfying in its thriller ending.” (Anita Shreve)
“A deft, perceptive exploration of a fascinating neurological condition, and a cracking good thriller.” (Lionel Shriver)
“A terrific first novel - well-written, genuinely unsettling and psychologically very plausible. Thrillers seldom come much better than this. Loved it, read it in one.” (Joanne Harris)
“An exceptional thriller. It left my nerves jangling for hours after I finished the last page.” (Dennis Lehane)
“So high-concept, so ambitious and so structurally brilliant. It's so rare to read a thriller that's perfect in every detail, but this one definitely qualifies!” (Sophie Hannah)
“A deeply unsettling debut that asks the most terrifying question - what do you have left when you lose yourself?” (Val McDermid)
“A truly amazing debut. The central character, Christine, is beautifully drawn. It's hard to imagine a more compelling, believable and sympathetic portrayal of a damaged human being. I loved it from start to finish.” (Mo Hayder)

Gripping

Would you listen to Before I Go To Sleep again? Why?

Thoroughly enjoyed this book - it was read well, I developed an empathy with the character and I was unsure who was telling the truth at times. The ending was interesting and until the end I didn't realise who Ben was, much like Christine. Highly recommended.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Before I Go To Sleep?

reliving her memories each day - the snippets that were revealed.

What about Susannah Harker’s performance did you like?

She made me believe she was Christine by her softly spoken voice.

Gripping Story

Having read the storyline I was a little worried that the book would be repetitive but it was anything but. The story unfolds in multiple layers to a dramatic conclusion. I really didn't want it to end . The narration is calm and understated and fits the story perfectly. I have been recommending it to everyone as one of my favourite audio books.

A good listen

This book is a good listen, but I did not particularly enjoy the narration. All a bit breathy. A good story though, if a little slow. Became quite compelling towards the end.

Tense, moving but a rushed ending

I loved this book.

For once I read the book first before watching the film. I learned my lesson with Gone Girl.

Very well read and a great story spoiled only by what I felt was a rushed ending with too much coincidence, leaps of faith and convenience.

Beautifully narrated

I listened to this book mainly while painting in my house. It made a boring job quite enjoyable. The story is quite clever but it's very nature made it repetitive in parts! The narrator really made this book work for me as she has such a soothing but not boring voice, she bought the character alive for me. Slight criticism in that the story is a tad too long. Would recommend especially as this is a new author.

Don't be put off by the film!!

I watched the film years ago and wasn't particularly impressed-I thought I'd give the book a try & find out more about the characters. Wow!! What a difference - the twists and turns of the plot had me almost shouting at the lead character. Even if you've seen the film it won't spoil the book, there is so much more to the book.

Disappointed.

Started well, the main characters built convincingly but the plot soon became obvious and characters less unbelievable.
