About this listen

A little bit wild and undeniably brave, the gentlemen of the Bastion Club have pursued adventures far and wide. But their exploits at home could prove to be the riskiest of all as they hunt an elusive target: the perfect bride.

In a moment of recklessness, Gervase Tregarth, sixth Earl of Crowhurst, swears he’ll marry the next eligible lady to cross his path. Cloistered at his ancestral castle in Cornwall, with nary a suitable woman for miles, he never expects he’ll have to fulfill his pledge, at least not until the London season begins. But then he meets his neighbor, the very appealing Madeline Gascoigne.

Years of secret service to the Crown have taught Gervase the value of always having a loophole - there will be no wedding if he and Madeline are not compatible in every way. So he sets out to prove that they would make a most dreadful match by luring her into his arms and, ultimately, his bed. From their very first kiss, Gervase discovers that the headstrong and independent Madeline is no meek country miss - and that the fire between them will burn long beyond that first seduction.

Stephanie Laurens began writing as an escape from the dry world of professional science. Her hobby quickly became a career when her novels captivated readers around the globe, making her one of the romance world’s most beloved and popular authors. She has been writing for more than twenty years and is a New York Times, Publishers Weekly, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today best-selling author.

Lovely story but terrible reading

I hesitate to criticise narrators as often I find it’s just different from how I would hear it in my head. However I feel I must in this instance.
I’ve listened to many of the Stephanie Laurens books on audible and enjoyed all of them except for this one. I’ve previously read this book and I know the heroine is not a supercilious simpering twit. However the narrator would have us believe she is. In fact ALL of the female voices he attempted made the ladies sound utterly vapid. The gentlemen faired little better. SL’s dialogue might not quite be Jane Austen, but she has a fine take on social wit and excellent put downs that this clod just rode roughshod over.
It’s put me right off. If there are more narrated by him I won’t be buying them.

Enjoyable story

I have given this book 4stars despite having enjoyed it. I love the characters in these books and have read all the different series except the pirate ones at least once. The reason for the loss of a star is 1 - if I had wanted so much sex education I would have bought a sex manual , vicarious sex is not my style. I feels as if the publisher has been promised so many words and this is the easiest way to build up your word count! 2 - Why when you have Dalzels” name right in in the first few Audio books you change it in this? I have worked with 2 people with this name over the past 40 years both told me the same story about their name. It is a Scottish name, it got its z when it was anglisized as the original letter was a Gaelic letter which looked a bit like a z the family motto being “ I Dare”. One of them came from Scotland the other was backing from New Zealand the only thing they had in common was that if they had had Claymore in their hand when you used their name sounding the z instead of Da”al they would have used it on you.

Loved the story

Loved the story, especially the end. The plot was really good. I love it when DL and others of the Bastion club are included in every story. This time I don't no why, but for some reason, they were calling DL, Dalziel . He was never referred to by that name before. I much prefer DL.
The narrator wasn't that great, I didn't really like the tone of his voice. In most of the dialogue he made their voices sound like everything was a joke. And the heroine sounded really whiny, and she was a strong wilful lady. Also the rest of the men of the Bastion club all sounded like women. Bring on Simon Prebble, he's brilliant. Unfortunately 2 more left narrated by Steven Crossley and then back to Simon Prebble.

Ignore the so called love story, the rest is good.

In this story they are in touching distance of the catching their final nemesis.
The kids are good solid characters, Malcom appears and disappears as an after thought. Proving he hasn't changed, no doubt is bring kept for another book.
Sex has to the prevailing story, so the up to now respectable heroine agrees to her own seduction. That take up enough chapters, but we have another copulating couple to fill the rest. A "buy one get one free" scenario.
To much fast forward to justify the cost, unless sex is all you want.
