Summary

Berlin, 1938

It’s no longer safe here.

When the Jewish families of Berlin start disappearing in nightly raids, 21-year-old Jacob Kagan knows it’s only a matter of time before the trucks come for him. Along with his family and best friend, he flees the country he’s always called home to find shelter in a Dutch refugee camp. Before long, the Netherlands falls to the Nazi war machine - Jacob’s new home is transformed into a transit camp with weekly trains bound for the horrors of the Eastern concentration camps.

Handpicked by the cruel new SS regime to police the camp’s Jewish population, Jacob has the opportunity to save his parents and best friend from the dreaded transport lists - but at what cost?

Based on true events, Beyond the Tracks is a redemptive story of unconditional loyalty, and a will to survive at impossible odds.

Improved towards the end

The story was good and I especially enjoyed the second part of the book .for me the narrator ruined the story ,his accent left the book feeling unbelievable for me .

A great book

The book is a great read and I’ve just bought the second one, the author’s notes at the end separate the fact from fiction, which I enjoyed so much.

Beyond the tracks

Very enjoyable book, very sad for the people who suffered, but you put their story out there.
We must never forget.
Thank you Michael .

Another book ruined by the narrator

I've lost count of the books I've given up on because the narrator insists on using those ridiculous voices. Why can't they just narrate.

True talent

This book is a must read. It tells of the sufferings of the WWII from a very different angle. Thoroughly enjoyed the whole recording, beautifully read and superbly written.

Great story, AWFULLY narrated

Loved the story and this is the only reason I kept listening. The narrator is truly, truly terrible, how can a German Jewish pharmacist living in Berlin sound cockney??? The son sounds like a posh English school boy?!?! So many of the other characters had such inappropriate accents it was almost funny.
I would read the book rather than listen!!!

Bizarre Accents

Distracted by the reader’s accents on occasion; not sure why a Berlin pharmacist would sound like the chimney sweep from Mary Poppins whilst his son spoke like Lord Snooty?

Very well written

This book is very well written. However, the reader lets it down. Sometimes he’s a cockney. Sometimes he is posh. Sometimes he sounds like he’s from the west country, it is distracting from the story. However, I did enjoy the story very much.
