About this listen

Shortly before Christmas, Chief Inspector Hanne Wilhelmsen is called to the scene of multiple murders. Four people are found shot dead at the home of the wealthy Stahlberg family. Three of the dead are members of the family, and the fourth victim is an undistinguished author, seemingly out of place. As Hanne and her longtime police partner, Billy T., investigate, they unearth many motives for the murders. But Hanne doesn't believe that the full story has been revealed, and she concentrates her efforts on discovering why the author was at the Stahlberg home. As Hanne draws closer to the truth, she will once again risk everything for justice. But this time, will she pay the ultimate price?

Confused

Really enjoyed the book and was gripped... But the ending was a bit too dramatic for me. Had left me confused about my whole perception of the story.
Overall 5 stars. A compete page turner.

Unsatisfactory ending

Story:
The writer takes time to delve into a long story behind potential suspects, however the ending turned out to be totally something else, which is quite common in whodunnits, however it came quickly and within what left like 20 mins of the end of the book. Contrary to the in-depth look into the suspects' lives, the reader gets only a flimsy explanation how the protagonist reached such out-of-the-blue conclusion.
This leaves me with the feeling the writer didn't know how to end the book and came up with a rushed ending after being pushed by her publishers.
Performance:
The voice was far too soft and self-effacing for a protagonist who is so self-absorbed and determined to the point of creating conflicts. A more decisive voice would have been better, not hard or harsh or loud, but a voice that would command leadership for someone with experience as described by the writer.
On occasions, the narrator was not giving enough pause between sentences, leaving the reader entering into another scene as if continuing the previous one, rather than leading to a different chapter.
Story:
A good variety of characters, but overall let down by an abrupt and fairly unexplained ending. In addition, too many times, it felt some characters were introduced as if they were already known to the reader. Too often, it took time to realise how they fitted. Readers may have to go back and double-check how they integrate into the story.
Conclusion:
This could have been a good book, all elements are there but overall a bit all over the place, a narrator’s voice that doesn’t match the protagonist’s personality and a rushed ending.
Such experienced author should have delivered a polished story rather than what feels like a tentative first book.
