About this listen

Love can be a dangerous thing....

Hanna simply wants to be loved. With a head plagued by hallucinations, a medicine cabinet full of pills, and a closet stuffed with frilly, violet dresses, Hanna's tired of being the outcast, the weird girl, the freak. So she runs away to Portero, Texas, in search of a new home.

But Portero is a stranger town than Hanna expects. As she tries to make a place for herself, she discovers dark secrets that would terrify any normal soul. Good thing for Hanna, she's far from normal. As this crazy girl meets an even crazier town, only two things are certain: Anything can happen, and no one is safe.

Critic reviews

"With plenty of sex and violence, this is a book for mature teens, who will find Portero to be an intriguing world and biracial Hanna a startlingly unusual heroine with a poignant, memorable voice." (Booklist)

Marmite?

Reading a previous review I have mixed feelings. I love marmite and although I definitely agree that this is a marmite book,I think it is a tad way out for me to give it a marmite mark - not a 0 but not a 5. Nothing I can identify with but definitely different so a 3

Very Marmitey

I for one absolutely loved this book from the moment it starts with Hanna creeping into her mums house and the fact that her dead dad is talking to her you know its going to be a little different. Hanna is a total nut job but in a nice way she has loads of pills to take which she either does or dosent depending on her mood. She also wears nothing but purple and so stands out as everyone in Portero wears black as they do not want to draw attention to themselves.

Our heroine Hanna has had to leave her old house after hitting her aunt over the head and now has decided to move in with her mother who wants nothing to do with her. Portero is a very strange town with supernatural goings on, strange creatures and kids going missing all the time. When Hanna arrives she is treated like a total outsider and finds she has to prove to her mother and the rest of the townsfolk that she is worthy of staying. This means going on a hunt, tackling strange creatures, suicide doors and trying to keep it together.

This book is a very refreshing change from the usual offerings. No vampires or werewolves here. Hanna is strange but is surprisingly lovable as a heroine she has a love interest Wyatt who is equally wierd although she does tend to use him a little bit. The book is very funny in places and also can be a little disturbing (especially with her mum at the lake) all that being said I think it is a real marmite book you will either love it or hate it. The narration was good I found the voice suited the character. I am eagerly awaiting her next offering a slice of cherry which is due out in January 2011.
