About this listen
When a young woman is at the wrong place at the wrong time, she becomes a person of interest in a murder investigation.
Maddie Baker just wants to make ends meet. She gave up her school librarian career to return to her hometown and take care of her elderly aunt. So when she starts making Uber runs to supplement her barista job, she never dreamt she’d not only drop a man off to his murder but be labeled a person of interest in his death.
Detective Noah Langley is looking for a fresh start in a city with a lower crime rate and a fraction of the population of Memphis. It’s just what he needs to recover from a nightmare that left him severely injured and his teenage mentee dead. The first murder since he’s arrived in Cockamamie is a chance to prove to his boss and himself he should be there.
Noah doesn’t have many leads, but the few he has all tie back to one person: Maddie Baker. She doesn’t seem the type, but the last time he presumed someone was innocent he nearly died. Has Noah lost his instincts? Because if he can’t trust his gut, it might be time to turn in his badge.

Blind Bake
Oh I love this story!!!
Crime and lovestory in one.
The interactions between Maddie and Noah are soooo funny, especially how Maddie reacts at Noah in the beginning.
My first book written by this author and I enjoyed it a lot.

What a Brilliant Book!
This came up as a recommendation for me, because I've listened to so many of the Penny Reid books that Chris Brinkley has narrated. I absolutely adore listening to his voice. His gentle Tennessee accent and warm chuckle are like melted chocolate to my English ears 😊 As Police Procedurals & Mystery Novels are my other favourite genres, I decided to give this a try, and I'm so delighted that I did.
An absolutely fantastic start to what will hopefully be a long series. Book 2 is already available, and I have already purchased it. This book had lots of great plot twists & suspense, as well as some absolutely edge of the seat, fighting for your life parts. I would have been asleep much sooner than 4am this morning, if the writing hadn't been so compelling! There was no way I could stop listening! 😁
This author, and the female narrator, Shannon McManus, are both new to me, but I will be seeking out much, much more of their work.

Kept me guessing!
Now this is what I am talking about! A book that pulls me in, gives me a story to sink my teeth into without being too heavy and characters that are intriguing! Denise Grover Swank introduces Maddie Baker. Moved in with her Aunt who has dementia, she is doing whatever she needs to make ends meet. Driving Uber is her side job, and who knew the man she was driving would be murdered? Now in the midst of an investigation, she meets Noah, the detective. At first these two butt heads but the push pull of their conversations could be more, right? So many suspects, so many side revelations and so many amazing characters! From Ernie the homeless man to Maddie's lucid aunt, we are treated to some truly interesting people. Then Grover adds in those we love to hate, like certain teachers and officers on the take! It's small town, everyone knows everybody and it's a fun, thrilling story! I cannot wait for more!
Shannon McManus and Chris Brinkley are our storytellers and they had me captivated from the start. Maddie is a busy, smart yet excitable character who cannot sit still. McManus captures the essence of that personality and creates a fabulous voice for her. She is tough and brave, and keeps her real. Brinkley is so good as Noah, bringing his frustration in as the case accelerates. He keeps his feelings of confusion of Maddie on the edge, giving that emotional tug without committing and making us crazy!! Loved this team. They sound like they had fun recording it and made the listen enjoyable.

A great start to a new series!
This was a giant leap out of my usual genre(s) but the premise sounded so interesting that I just had to take a chance on it. I wasn't disappointed at all. It was truly a nice palate cleanser from the dark romances I'm used to reading.
Maddie's life has been tossed topsy-turvy in the past couple of months and she finds herself back home in Cockamamie, Tennessee. Truly I laughed out loud at the name of that town. I could absolutely hear the southern twang whenever it was said too! Anyway, back to the story.
Maddie takes up a job as an Uber driver while she cares for Aunt Deidre, whom has dementia, as an extra side job as well as working as a barista at a coffee shop. She has a lot going on, a lot to juggle, and honestly, she never thought that this would be the road that her life would take but she's determined to make the best of it.
Of course, Maddie finds herself in trouble because of her Uber job, which lands her in Detective Noah Langley's crosshairs. The push and pull between Maddie and Noah was really well done. I absolutely loved Aunt Deidre too. She's so funny and sweet! Let's also not forget the unique residents of the town of Cockamamie, yeah?
The audiobook was very well narrated I thought. I had never listened to a narration by either Shannon McManus or Chris Brinkley before but I was not disappointed. Shannon brought Maggie to life in such a way that you'd want to listen again. Chris did a fantastic job with Noah as well.

Great start to a captivating series!
This is my first Denise Grover Swank book and it won’t be last! I loved the story line, filled with mystery and greatly chiseled characters, and the ending left me hungry for book 2!
I am new to both of these narrators and I enjoyed them both! They did a great job at telling Maddy & Noah’s story. I did not bore from hearing them and loved the way they brought these characters to life.
If you are looking for a great start to a new series, grab this one up. It’s filled with twist and turns and will leave you ready for book 2 in this series!

A Great Mystery Suspense!
This was my first Denis Grover Swank's book, and won't be my last. This is the first book in the Maddie Baker Mystery Series, a Mystery Suspense. I loved it! Maddie and Noah are great characters. Maddie is a formidable caretaker to her aunt who has dementia. Noah is a detective, handsome, and enigmatic. I liked the mystery, the twists and turns, and the slow burn romance. The supporting characters are intriguing. Lance, Noah's partner, is an interesting character. Looking forward to listening to Bake Off, the second book in the series, to know what happens next. Shannon McManus and Chris Brinkley did an outstanding job bringing this story to life. I enjoyed it.
