Summary
When a talented new player joins the perennially losing sub-minor-league hockey team the Fighting Aardvarks, it marks the beginning of a winning tradition. But things aren't as they seem, and players begin to change. First-line center Hammie learns the truth: The Aardvarks are becoming vampires, and it's up to him to stop them before the infestation spreads beyond just the team.
Critic reviews
"Healy’s snickering, boyish humor is a highlight of this novel - from the characters’ postmodern comments on vampiric pop culture to the hockey teammates’ constant good-natured trash talking to the wry snarkiness of the 'narrator' (a lovely twist as to the identity of the narrator I won’t spoil for you, but wait for the delightful punchline) pull us through this story with tight action and a keen series of cliffhanger chapter endings." (Jenn Zuko, Nerds in Babeland)

just couldn't get past chapter 1
narrator has a nasal twang which I hoped I'd adapt to: unfortunately I couldn't adapt to it and gave up trying to listen after 4 attempts.

Goal
On wow! I normally shy away from vampire type book (because well vampires are just creepy) but I was looking for something different to listen to and boy did I find it with this book. I loved it! It wasn't creepy or gross at all, unless you don't like dentist. In fact it is a humours adventure that makes fun of its self. It is told by a story teller that will quite often share his opinion of the event with witty comments that will have chuckling. The characters are fun and I loved the camaraderie between them all,
I even grew to like the vampire. The author always manages to surprise me and I really liked the new spin on things at the end. Can't really say much without giving it away, so you will just have to read or listen to it yourself. I don't know anything about hockey but it wasn't necessary and I had no problems imagine the swoosh of the puck as it flew though the air or the clink of the skates. I was just a fun humours adventure that I will listen to again.
For a team that is known for losing it is a surprise when a new team member joins the team and they start to win. The change in luck isn't the only thing that has changed, Hammie's team mates are acting strange and don't even mention the smoothies they are chugging back but worse of all what ever is happening it seems to be spreading. Winning is nice but at what cost? Hammie and his last few team members still unaffected seek help from an expert and not just from a dentist. Can they curb the infection and more importantly save them at the same time?
I liked the narrator and his perfect delivery and comic timing made this a real great to listen to.
