Summary

Dorothy Wellesley was a poet, gardener, traveler and heiress; she was also bisexual and a rebel. She became the lover of Vita Sackville-West, wrecking her marriage to the Duke of Wellington. She was the intimate friend of W.B. Yeats in his final years. On the fringes of the Bloomsbury Group, she had a unique view of these iconic writers and artists.
The biography draws on unpublished material, including private Wellesley family papers and hitherto unknown source materials. This is a riveting story of a complex and fascinating woman.

A life worth telling

Jane Wellesley’s account of her grandmother’s life is a most beautiful reminder that nothing is ever wasted. Dorothy Wellesley’s dedication to poetry has deeply moved me. This book is a true gift; it gave me the honour to ‘meet’ a remarkably ‘wild spirit’. The author asks intelligent and searching questions and her answers feel fair, respectful and loving. Jane Wellesley has certainly created a view that has inspired me to be in awe of her grandmother for many more reasons than her poetry.
