Summary
Scott Ourecky wanted to fly - he never dreamed he'd end up in a secret military space program.
The year is 1968: The Cold War is far from over, and nuclear annihilation is always only a heartbeat away. America is racing the Soviet Union to land men on the moon, a war is raging, and a pivotal presidential election looms on the horizon. A child of the early space age, Lieutenant Scott Ourecky joined the air force with aspirations of going to flight school. A brilliant engineer, he repeatedly fails the aptitude test to become a pilot but is selected to work on a highly classified military space program - the innocuously named Aerospace Support Project - in which air force astronauts are slated to fly missions to intercept and destroy suspect Soviet satellites.
When one of the astronauts in training abruptly falls out of the project, Ourecky is asked to fill in for the two-man simulated missions and survival training only. He's asked to serve with a headstrong and abrasive test pilot, Major Drew Carson, until another astronaut can be assigned. By far the most proficient pilot assigned to the project, Carson has a dangerous propensity to engage in pick-up dog fighting sessions while on cross-country training flights. And although Ourecky was only a temporary place holder, not destined to fly in space, he soon finds himself much more involved than he ever anticipated - and in deepest peril.
Based on a real secret space program, Blue Gemini combines high-altitude action with edge-of-your-seat storytelling to create a modern Cold War thriller.

Absorbing story
I really liked this. For folk like me who were small children at the time this story is set, the early days of space exploration have a seductive resonance. This story taps straight into this, taking a cancelled "black" programme and making it real. This is primarily a "Boy's Own" and likely "Boys only" story, but nevertheless a well-written, well-paced adventure rather than a "thriller". There is a nice balance of action and science, with intelligent characterisation rather than Top Gun-style heroes.
Robust history it certainly is not, but an engaging adventure with a satisfying flavour of realism? Absolutely.

Brilliant Super, understated performance.
Kevin narrated as good as it gets. I'm a old hand at this shit. I modified my garage listening to Kevin. Truly, I wanted the protagonists to come out on top.
And at the same time.
Garage good.

A Bit Short on Thrills, But...
If this was a film it would be described as a 'buddy movie' (buddy book doesn't sound right). I can't say that i was ever on the edge of my seat listening to this but, that said, there was lots to enjoy, not least the narration provided by Kevin Stillwell. The tech is enlightening and I must say the thought of black ops in space just never occurred to me. The concept is frightening but somehow not surprising - who knows what might be spinning around up there. This is the first of a trilogy and much of it probably serves as a set up for no.'s 2 and 3. Once I get my feet back on the ground I'll be going back.
Having now read volumes 2 and 3 i can tell you that they are well worth listening to every single minute.

Brilliant 😂👍
Just brilliant. Typical tech thriller. Just what I needed at the moment. Full of great and interesting characters. Easy to listen too and easy too follow. Glad there are two more books in this story. Can't wait to listen to the next one.

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. One of the best that I have heard. There are no tick box characters.
Just a simple story. But boy does it pack a punch. If you are fed up with today’s PC world, give this a try. Some of the feats of endurance are what made our world great.
Sadly, such achievements are behind us, but this is a reminder of what made America great and why the Western world has achieved so much more…

Tedious
Sorry but it was not for me. Incessant and a little boring - had to find something else.

Not a thriller but ok story Lacked excitement.
Not my usual fair....I got it as it was ment to be a thriller but I would not call it a thriller. The story is ok, there is a lot of historical and technical info about the early days of space exploration, Army training etc. Assuming it's as accurate as it sounds to someone who knows nothing it might be a more interesting book to someone who is interested in the space race. I found the details description was often a bit boring. Set iat end of Vietnam and the mids of the cold war. The narrator was good, the voices suited the book and the variouse American accents sounded fine though my English ears might notice a duff American regional accent less well than someone from that bit of America. Listen to this book was quite relaxing to help sleep but I found I kept waiting for somthing to happen. When I explained the story to a friend it seemed quite a bit had happened it just didn't feel like that as I was listening. Lacked excitement. One of the few books were I found the narration was better than the story.

Cute!
This is a good story but not particularly thrilling. I was waiting for something to happen but it just never really did. However the evolution of Scott and Drew and their relationship is so cute! To me, the story is about two guys becoming best friends.
