Summary

Napoleon has been defeated at Waterloo, and the ensuing peace brings with it both the desertion of nearly half of Captain Aubrey's crew and the sudden dimming of Aubrey's career prospects in a peacetime navy. When the Surprise is nearly sunk on her way to South America - where Aubrey and Stephen Maturin are to help Chile assert her independence from Spain - the delay occasioned by repairs reaps a harvest of strange consequences.

The South American expedition is a desperate affair; and in the end Jack's bold initiative to strike at the vastly superior Spanish fleet precipitates a spectacular naval action that will determine both Chile's fate and his own.

Another cracking tale

Sadly the last in the series of great sea adventures from O'Brian with excellent narration from Ric Jerrom.

A great series

This is the second time of listening to the OBrian books, so well read by Ric Jerron.
Will be listening again for third time in the not too distant future.

Well it's all over.

Finishing a great book series always makes me sad, this was one of the best. Fantastic, we need more movies!

The most excellent series

I am reviewing the series rather than this last book. I can think of few literary experiences that have given me more pleasure than the Aubrey Maturin series. The depth of characterisation is incredible and three dimensional. The main characters are all lovely and the villains devious and dastardly. The historical details are riveting and the naval battles exhilarating. Lastly Ric Jerrom is one of the very best readers. He can do many realistic accents and voices including women and manages to keep them separate and consistent. I’m very sorry there are no more books!

wonderful series.

Sad to be finished listening to these wonderful books. I have read them all twice before but, the brilliant narration of Ric Jerrom made them a joy to hear. I wish someone would pick up from the much missed Patrick O'Brien, God rest him, and write another twenty books.

Aubrey Maturin books

The whole Aubrey and Maturin series is a tour de force. It's basically one enormous completely engaging story. I'll never tire of revisiting this wonderful naval world. This audio version is brilliantly brought to life by Ric Jerrom. Highly recommended.
